Nail and head Lazy-Commuter. I hope the driver in question gets a nice pat on the back and something slipped in the wage packet

yes, there is a distinction - i sometimes put a hand up in a 'thanks for being patient' signal, often if a lorry driver has been behind me all the way through a village (for them to accelerate from 20mph to 30mph, get past and pull in again would probably take the whole village;))
it probably improves cyclist-driver karma if only for that one driver, but they all add-up... but it is always just a hand up, rather than a positive beckon. I'd just urge against giving out 'overtake NOW' kind of messages - as when you're driving hazards can come on to the scene in a split second that can overturn the decision to overtake when it had all but been made. You want to commence the overtake asap after the time at which you've satisfied yourself that there are no hazards that would affect it, and to stay on the opposite side of the road for as little time as possible, so the decision of the time at which to commence an overtake is important, therefore that decision should be that of who's doing the overtake.

I think from what you've said though snapper it sounds like you probably did right given the circumstances.

I think that you are making a mountain out of a molehill Ben and you are not making much sense either.
all i'm saying is don't make the decision of drivers behind about when to overtake for them... that's all. I'll leave it at that... don't get me wrong it's not a big issue lee, probably not the most dangerous thing in the world if you do i'll admit.

Whats wrong with signalling to a driver that you feel it is safe/unsafe for them to pass you. You will nearly always have a better view of the road ahead & if its a rod that you use on a regular basis then you tend to find out over time where there will be places that it would be unsafe to attempt to overtake.

Not all lorry/bus drivers use the same roads on a regular basis.

Classic, I think we have confirmed that there was nothing wrong with what I did. Ben made a valid point that someone may make a wrong call at the wrong time.

It's all good..... I haven't had a response to my praise up yet though B)

debatable, but imho unwise to signal drivers to pass. it's up to them to decide when to overtake and their responsibility to do so safely, it's not your responsibility to BE overtaken. i've been driving behind cyclists before who've signalled me to pass when I didn't consider it safe to at all.

Any driver would hopefully (/should) take it as the cyclist saying: "I'm aware of your presence and don't plan to pull into your path in the next 10 seconds". Much like if another driver flashes headlights to let a car out.

I get folk that will drop back....makes you paranoid, but many folk are great - I do a 'thanks' hand wave....the bus driver may well have been 'up' on time, so was happy.....

There is some stuff going on in Manchester at the mo.. with buses - looks like Stagecoach is taking over most of the other operators - all a bit odd...inspectors and 'data' collectors on them (PS I use the buses often between my base and central MCH if it's raining - soaking wet kit in a bag for hours - no drying facilities. Sweatty kit, I'll live with.....)

Some shenanigans going on.....not that I was ear wigging last week........
