As long as I breathe, I attack.
+1 the 2 times i have nearly been hit both times it was a skip lorry , on the same stretch of road as well:sad:

I have even changed route that takes me up pretty much a 3 mile hill ( ouch my knees hurt tonight) and on the flat bits i still get numpties overtaking to close, in fact was turning right on a mini roundabout and an old biddy came straight across oblivious to all .

I ride in the primary position, safely and assertively yet every day some one comes past with inches to spare , maybe i just live in a bad area as no matter what route i take i see bad driving on a daily basis

+1 on HGV drivers normally being very courteous and careful with cyclists.

The absolute worst drivers on the road, IME, are skip-lorry drivers.

Yup, that's what I find. Also, GB HGV drivers are consistently better than I expect to find on mainland European roads.

During the final descent into Monmouth during the Forest of Dean Spring Classic a very kind HGV driver drove behind us for about 2/3 miles and almost seemed to keep the other traffic off our tails. This allowed us to get to the town without any idiots trying to overtake at inoportune moments on quite a steep hill. This had already happened during the event when some drivers seemed frustrated with having to pass the 'unusual' nuber of cyclists on the road. On reaching the river bridge at the bottom of the hill we acknowleged his help and he seemed genuinely pleased to have been of assistance. Like others here I have no issues with the vast majority of HGV drivers.

Having driven and ridden this road many times (assuming it is the one from Coleford), if he did try and overtake, he would have put you, other vehicles and himself in a very high risk situation.

He did the right thing - he did really the only thing given the circumstances.

Taking the biscuit
I always make a point of keeping as visible as possible for HGV drivers and don't filter past them on the left. If I enter an ASL box in front of an HGV I try to make eye contact and say hello/ nod so they know I'm there.
Nine times out of ten I get a favourable response for making this effort.

No amount of communication would have stopped the low loader who cut across me the other day(New Cross A2 Eastbound)only to stop at a visibly red light only 20 yards ahead and would have side swiped me had I not realised his intention and pulled back.
I got his attention to point out he could have left a bit more room but he then wouldn't wind down his window and just kept mouthing 'F*kc *ff!' and staring straight ahead.

The most impressive thing is that he gained nothing by driving like that and failed to see that he was actually in the wrong road position as, after the lights, that lane becomes a red route/bus lane and has delivery vans parked along it.

My reward was to leave the lights ahead of him and then hearing the blasts of many horns as he then tried to push his rig out into the right lane and the rest of the traffic having none of it!

As another HGV driver, and cyclist, (And scooter rider!), I also find this thread very encouraging.

Care, and consideration to cyclists was pointed out during my instruction/test 5-or-so years back, and this, imho, would infer a new legal requirement to take a periodic driving test to 'update' car drivers...... ( I'll get me coat !)

On a club ride when crossing a duel carriage way we had a nice HGV driver flash us across and blocked the cars from overtaking so we could actually get across the road which was nice.

Who was it that said truckers spent their time, 'murdering prostitutes' ?

Jezza!

Was that a criticism? In all fairness, I think most lorry drivers found that episode funny and appreciated that it showed the skill in driving a big lorry and gave people more of an awareness when it came to lorries.

some people are still unaware lorries are fitted with speed limiters...... and look on in disbelief after they pass you when overtaking another lorry doing a similar speed, yes slower 1 should slow down out of courtesy, but it rarely happens. They must think you hold them upon purpose (after all they do own the road don't they).

I do that! If my truck is being overtaken by someone going 1mph faster than me I slow down and let them go. Much easier all round.
