I had a pair (still have other Eastons). It took a lot of research to find it out, but I thnk they are Shimano compatible but with special splines. WIll try and find the page that explained it

It's definitely shimano. I think I've found the source of the problem. These are R4SL hubs which are red. Apparently the red ones only fit dura ace 7800/7900... great! Wish I'd known that before haha.

I think so as well. They should also take Sram which are interchangeable.
Having taken a better look the pattern is not like the Shimano hubs I've seen. Also the splines are quite chewed-up which makes fitting the cassette difficult. There should also be one spline wider than the others too ....

I must stress the Shimano 10spd is ONLY compatible with Shimano 10 speed cassettes, the splines are deeper and look different to the regular shimano freehub body.

You probably have an alloy freehub with Shimano deep splines. Once upon a time Shimano decided to make some higher group freehubs lighter, so they used alloy rather than steel, but to stop the sprockets chewing into alloy splines they made the splines deeper (for corresponding deeper slots in the sprockets). For profile see this, Sheldon also discussed them here.
