What are your plans for cycling in the winter?

I like winter riding. I tend to have shorter rides but I like the freshness, the quieter roads and the winter fitness.

I'll use my mountain bike on days that are frozen and if any snow falls , I don't mind too much riding in the rain but slippery surfaces I'd feel more comfy on a mtb

Absolutely hate winter with a vengeance and couple that with my poor fitness now and lack of drive...its going to be a long hard few months

Cycling in the winter tends to conjure up images of bright dry cold crisp days , but they really seem to be few and far between.Where I live the lanes are usually turned into mud baths and never seem to dry out. My old Peugeot will stay in doors over the winter months because its quite sentimental to me and want to keep it looking perfect, and the Boardman mountain bike will make its emergence from the garden shed. With its disc brakes and chunky tyres it will be more suitable for the bad road conditions..,it's like a tail of two halves, as I tend to be a roadie ,in the summer and a green laner off road rider in the winter

The worst I had was -11 and the liquid in the brakes froze but still carried on!

I no-longer like getting cold and wet so I'm looking at getting an elliptical cross trainer to put along side the turbo trainer.

I talked a mate into doing a Winter audax with me back in January. By the end he was so cold he was shaking too much to sign his brevet card. Don't think he'll be joining me next year! I've got the Metric Century a Month Challenge to start all over again. Fancy a go at it, starting in January anyone?

My only two crashes in the last 9 years of cycling have both come on black ice. Won't be riding when there is ice about. Other than that, my favourite conditions are clear, sunny, crisp days when the temperature is between 3 and 10 degrees. Will just carry on riding the same bike as I do for the rest of the year.

I surprised myself by making more of an effort than usual last December, when I rode 529 miles. Inevitably though, the winter blues eventually set in and I only managed 218 miles in January and 380 miles in February.

I would like a more consistent winter in 2017/18. If I could ride (say) 350-400 miles a month in Dec/Jan/Feb and top that up with 3 or 4 hours a week of intensive turbo training then I would be satisfied. I would like to start next year fitter than I am now (and at least a stone or so lighter!) and get really cycling fit by next summer.

I should complete the Metric Century a Month Challenge this year. I will certainly go for that again in 2018, but at the back of mind is a little voice telling me to attempt the Imperial a Month as well, but that would imply getting stuck in come January ...

Commuting as normal, but with the route adjusted if there's been the possibility of ice overnight.

Usual general rides, again with the road conditions taken into account.

More use of the flat bar, MTB or Spa (spare wheels with Schwalbe G-One knobblies fitted)

I love sunny, bitterly cold winter late morning or early afternoon rides, but with the appropriate clothing and bike a muddy back road route can be just as much fun (as long as it's not raining)

The key is full length mudguards and the right clothing. Don't like rain.
Jan-March is turbo time with weather permitting long rides on weekends
