What are your plans for cycling in the winter?

I have come across the issue of the mudguards on the Winter Audax, and it only being able to take 23 mm tyres before. It was discussed on another thread a while ago and nearly put me off buying one, but the one I bought has 25 mm tyres and runs okay with them. The clearance is extremely fine though and I have been warned before about the mudguards getting clogged up. I'll see how it goes when the roads get nasty, wet and muddy, perhaps follow your lead to a CGR if the warnings prove well founded.

Mine once got slower, & slower on a ride
I thought it was just me getting tired, until a noise started

Just 'road-silt' as the last stretch was along a bypass, with a bit of construction traffic on it
It's not as though the tyres on it were/are particularly bulbous '23' sections (Schwalbe Lugano)

Yes, I've had a couple of bikes where that was a problem, a muddy lane could see me at the roadside clearing out my mudguards.

There's very little unsuitable cycling weather just unsuitable clothing.
That said if the wind is from the east, off the sea plus sideways rain then my bike stays in the garage.
Apropos clogged mudguards. Most of my cycling is by the beach, wet sand builds up but then tends to clear itself. What it has done is abrade the inside of both mudguards back to bare metal.

Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted

I live on the west coast so have your problems the other way round ^_^

Can't recall who it was, but last time this was being discussed, someone said they carried a teaspoon with them to scrape out the mudguards when they got clogged up.

Keep going

If we have snow, & too much to ride in, the fell-running shoes will come out, as they do in such instance
It's amusing over-taking cars downhill, on foot:laugh:

Two of my choices of footwear
Inov-8 X-Talon 212
Light-weight, comfortable (worn with no inner-soles, so lots of feeling, when rough)
Kit. 2015. Inov-8. X-Talon 212. 1.JPG

Inov-8 OROC 340
A bit more relaxed fit can be worn with thick socks
More importantly, tungsten studs (worn only a couple of times, once for an icy fell-race)

Have you considered riding backwards so that you can use east coast solutions?

Ho ho, that is similar to a comment made to me when I was cycling home into a strong headwind, along the sea front a few weeks ago. I stopped to take a photo of the view across to North Wales and 3 rather drunken people in the dunes just behind me started talking to me. One asked if I was enjoying my ride, and when I said it would be a lot better f the wind wasn't in my face, one of them replied, "Well why don't you go the other way then?" Simple logic at its best.
