I need to replace an axel nut on the rear wheel of my SRAM imotion9 hybrid bike. The nut I require is M10 x 1mm. I've replaced the rear axel nuts before having stripped the thread in the nuts so this is the second time it's happened (I'm grateful the axel thread isn't damaged because I think that would be the end of the entire hub).

What's the best metal for an M10 axel nut? I've seen stainless steel, carbon steel, inox, titanium... Maybe it's unwise to fit a really hard metal axel nut as it could risk damaging the thread? Thoughts and opinions appreciated, thanks.

Correct - the nuts on hub geared bikes are usually sacrificial, since changing the axle is difficult (especially with no spares being made since 2017).

I have a bag of genuine SRAM ones somewhere. I think they may be domed ones, though. What is the axle protrusion from the dropout and lock washer?

Axle. A rod or spindle which is the centre of a wheel.

Axel. A detective played by Eddie Murphy in some low grade US films.

Axl. Is the made up name of Axl Rose, lead singer of some band. (Real name Bruce!!)
