Not a big difference, no. A 50-11 will spin out around 40mph, depending on what cadence you can control. Plenty for the vast majority. 48-11 will be almost the same.

There are some for sale s/h that is. Not sure if they are near you have a look on bikeradar. Maybe that way you'll know but for me its thr canyon however you plan to use it for commuting do you want additionals like rack and mudguard eyelets ie a winter/tourer bike

TBH i'll probably switch back to my hybrid during the winter, i currently don't bother with mudguards on it so will probably not have them on this. I use a rucksack too after having panniers for some time, so don't need them either... Out of interest though i'm assuming the Canyon does not have the option?

RE: Canyon
In terms of my flat commute, and down hills, is there much difference between the 48/34 and 50/34 in terms of cruising speed and spinning out down hills?.. At the moment on my hybrid i can keep averages of ~ 16-17 mph comfortably on flats. (the cassette on both is 11-32).

TY
Tbh I didn't realise the 105 would have an 11-32 cassette as this used to only be Apex it MTB territory.

I now realise that Shimano have introduced a compact wide range triple replacement as well... So in actual fact the only real difference is your shifter preference.

Thanks, so i need not worry then.

I guess now it's just a case of trying the Shimano and SRAM at the LBS and seeing which I prefer...

Thanks for all the advice everyone, i'll probably order on the w/e after trying some... I was going to wait but looking around has got me craving one too bad now, ordering ASAP!

No eyelets but you can always get clip on race blades

outlash

also available in orange
2) I know they offer a 30 day 'test' period BUT are there any similar bikes (geometry) that I can go to my LBS and try for the feel, any suggestions?

Can I get this straight? You want to go to down to your LBS, spending time with a salesman trying out bikes with no intention of buying one?

Tony.

As a salesman I would relish this situation, there's nothing I like more than a customer that wants to buy, even if its not from me, it's my job to make him see the error of his ways and persuade him my products are suitable or source a suitable product for him (or her)

Indeed, and so much easier to buy a bike that fits etc from a local shop than having the hassle and wait to buy from Germany I'd say  The LBS will give it the 6 week check, deal with any possible issues, may discount other purchases, fit accessories etc. No risk of damage in transit and the resultant hassle with the retailer and courier, returns etc

Go for the Scott, I've got a speedster 10 and its quick, frame is a beaut, my speeds are average but it rolls well and up and down hills it's a dream, looks sweet as well. Just my opinion but don't discount it.

Indeed... I'm looking to buy. If the salesman at the LBS can 'woo' me into one of their bikes i'll happily part with my money. Additionally i'll need accessories and shoes etc so if it's good service they'll still make money out of me!

I sell watches and rings and and constantly battling against online retailers but a ring on the finger or watch on the wrist is worth a lot more than a couple of % discount as these are tactile products, and I assume an @rse on saddle would be the same

I've never had any problems and love my current Scott... I do like their road bikes, I'm just wondering if a change of look/brand etc is better, i don't want it too similar to my hybrid.

Hey Dale - try and have a go on a Ghost Race 4900, GlobalBikes near Chester does them for about £880 - I got one 3 weeks ago and really pleased, it was best bike I tried after Merida, Felt and Trek try-outs
Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade my Scott hybrid (which I've had for 3 years), I want a good road bike (my first), which will manage (for comfort/speed) a weekly 60mile+ route with 3k+ ft climbing and daily commutes also... I'm happy to spend up to ~£800.

I've narrowed it down to these 3 so far:

1) Canyon Roadlite Al 6.0 - http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=3073 (£860)
2) B'Twin FC 3 - http://www.decathlon.co.uk/fc-3-road-bike-black-id_8221749.html (£850)
3) Scott Speedster 40 - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/speedster-40-compact-2013-road-bike-ec042439#features (£800)

Out of these 3 which is the 'best' buy, OR alternatively are there any that I may have overlooked?

*Additionally, I can test ride #2 and #3, but the Canyon is via the internet... Are there any bikes out there that are similar as to give me a good understanding of how the bike feels prior to ordering, if that is the chosen one of course?

Thank you in advance
