What bikes work well on trains/buses?

I will add. I owned a Bike Friday for a few years, great ride, better than the road bike it was built from ( measurements taken from a bike that you already know fits). The quick fold was terrible and huge. The put it in a suitcase fold took me nearly an hour and apparently when you get good at it 20 minutes.
My experience taking a bike on a train involves only Brompton and Japanese trains plus some time on Amtrak. Public transportation of every kind sucks out loud in the USA, this is why Bike Friday is about because of the slow fold. But if it's touring and the occasional train home etc... Bike Friday is hard to beat. Only available on their website I'm afraid. No I don't work for any bike company.

For ferries I was specifically thinking about the Harwich–Hook of Holland ferry, where the Rail–Sail ticket didn't include bike carriage for a couple of years. However it now looks like they've reinstated the option to book a bike with that, which is excellent news.

Good news. (although annoyingly I don't have any Hook' trips planned next year ...)
About 8h before your post I told someone over coffee that you couldn't use bikes with that deal!

A bit late to this thread, but I specifically bought my Brompton (s-line, superlite, 2-speed) in early 2020 for exactly this sort of travelling. As it counts as luggage on both train and coach (Suffolk, England), I don't have to book and, if I can get on, so can my luggage. I've had a snide, passive-aggressive remark from a passenger on the train about why I should make room in a a non-bike compartment, but I simply pointed to their suitcase.
Oh, the ride on my type of Brompton is one I consider not for the novice (I've only ever experimented with taking my hands of the bars the once, just to prove to myself I could do it, to test the balance), but I've found it to be an absolute hoot and I managed a tour around the borders of Suffolk last year (one stage was over forty miles) without much discomfort.

Like the look, but the website doesn't give you a real good look at the bike for long...
