Further to my recent run-in with a tw*t, I am now 'looking' for a helmet cam. Reasonably cheap, reasonable quality. 30 mins - 1 hour memory is all I need a day.

Suggestions?

Hi there. I use a cheap muvi clone from china, bought on eBay for around £12. Daylight recordings are fantastic, as is the sound. It's small and weighs nothing. The one problem I have with it is that the battery life goes downhill within a month or so of buying it. Now, about 4 months in, and not used a great deal, it takes over 24hrs to get a fill charge and it will run out 20mins into ride. Still, itS a great but if kit

I was in Netto's yesterday and they were selling the Oregon atc2k for £37, I know that it was once a well mentioned camera in the forums, but like everything else it has been succeded by newer models. I stood and looked at it for a while but decided not to buy one in the end. Its recording time is a 2 hours with a 4gb card.

Perhaps there's some people in the forums still using one who may know more about that particular model, but there is still plenty of reviews online if you do a search

Just be careful with the muvi's they will be next to useless at night time. To get good night time footage you have to up the spend a bit.
I'm not sure I can offer advice on which, as my camera isn't self contained and costs a fair bit more.

The Muvi works well at night for a £50 camera. If there aren't any street lights then yes, you won't see anything (or much depending on your lights). However, in urban areas with street lighting they're pretty good in my opinion. I've got some demos on my site at night.

Ok, I take it back a bit, it will certainly show what happened with good street lighting, but you'd be very lucky to make out a reg, and if street lighting is poor then the video will be pretty poor.

Bit, it may be good enough for your purposes, only you can decide on how much to spend and what compromises you can make.

Which is why i sold mine, over 5 miles each way of my commute is on unlit roads so it was going to be fairly poor come winter time, and they would not have survived the wet .

Are their any military grade headcams that can do night vision for when it is dark dark giving high quality footage for a half decent price?
I recently got a Contour HD but have yet to try it in poor light or at night. Day time it is brilliant, a real step up from the Muvi (genuine version). Number plates are so easy to read. But it still needs an 8 or 16GB MicroSDHC card and a spare battery to get several hours of high quality footage. I was surprised at how good my Muvi was at night in lit urban areas but disappointed it couldn't clearly show number plates. I am hoping the Contour will be a whole lot better.

Hi, new member here but just wanted to add my bit about the Muvi. I've had the camera for a few months now, and have absolutley no complaints, use it 5 days a week for 45mins - 1hr per day. I have an 8GB card in it, which means i can store up videos if i can't review them when i've finished with the camera for the day. I'm sure i'll be getting another one, for the back of my bike, as i get a lot of patient drivers behind me and would like to show them on my Youtube channel - www.youtube.com/policemadad

I can't comment on what other cameras are like, as i've only ever had the Muvi, but i wouldn't hesitate in recommending it, it's good if you're on a budget.

To add, i use a strap i bought with the optional sports pack and have it around my head, with the camera on my forehead.

Happy shopping!

Muvi is the cheapest and offer reasonable quality. No protection in the wet though, so be careful. As for not picking up numberplates very clearly - I shout mine out to aid any footage captured (I have a Sony HQ1 setup though, when it works!) and helps clarify anything which can't easily be picked out from the videos.

there is a waterproof case you can buy as an extra. heard mixed reviews on the quality of them tho.last time I checked they were pretty cheap.

as for not getting numberplates.yell them out if you want them, even in day time with the best camera you can miss them.heck, I was nearly hit by a lorry without a numberplate!

just read an earlier suggestion of the atc2k.I used to have one.I wouldnt recommend it now a days. maybe the 5k, or new 9k would be good tho! more expensive mind.
