Similar thing here. I shot a sparrow with an air gun. I felt bloody awful.
... Just cycles and keeps bees. He tends to pull his shorts up a tad too far..
Could be me.

After all the arguments my mind remains unchanged. Magpies are an indigenous species and they should be allowed to continue with the life style that they have followed for millennia. It is sad that the song birds that I spend a small fortune feeding, are preyed upon by the Magpies, but that is bird life. We should not partake in species-ism and kill the Magpies. We should allow nature to run its course, the clever and astute Magpie will do well, but he will be no match for the Thrush or Blackbird who knows how to hide her nest.
A few years back I recall chatting to a woman who was distraught that the Magpies had taken all the young / eggs of the birds nesting in her garden. I asked her how she knew, she said she visited each nest everyday and one by one had noticed the decimation by the local Magpies. Very sad but this woman probably exposed all the nests by visiting them every day, she probably made the Magpies life easy.
Amen. Well said.Last night a mouse scuttled along the factory floor,it was a beautiful thing. It sat under a box washing its face, it had just come out of the works toilets, i dont blame it ,it like a pig sty in there some of the people are filthy beings.
The last few years every so often a bird of prey makes an appearance on my ride, its a beautiful thing gliding around the valley then i ride back into civilisation with the litter strewn in the gutter ,people there are some disgusting ones.
I drove home from work this morning, there was a family of rabbits playing on the roundabout and the bit of road that cars were not using, that made me laugh.
I watched a big snake swim up a stream one night in Australia about 7 feet long ,that was special.
I sat patiently at the end of a jetty once till dusk and then it appeared a salty croc came to check me out,he lay there floating with a glint in his eyes, that was special.
I walked the coastal path in Devon one late evening there sat 3 seals, that was a sight.
A grass snake appeared once whilst camping skittled straight across my path out of the bracken ,that was very lucky to see one of them.
Photograph a insect or butterfly and look at its detail, it is amazing.
Live and let live, i believe in reincarnation one day i might be that mouse.
Respect wild life and it will show itself.
+1
I am sick to the back teeth of other peoples cats coming into my garden trying to kill the birds that I so adore. No body would tolerate dogs being let out on the loose to kill what ever they fancied, so why should we tolerate it from cats.

Nature cannot run its original course when humans have seriously disrupted the natural environment. Once this happens nature is forced down a different line in which the harm caused is far worse than what the native flora and fauna have evolved to deal with.
An example of this is deer shooting in the Scottish highlands. Over the centuries people have killed the wolves that were the deers predator, thus disrupting the natural balance of the food chain. The felling of the ancient forests for charcoal during the industrial revolution has also put additional stress on the deer population. With no natural predators, the population keeps increasing and so does the destruction to the vegetation that the deer eat which prevents the forests re-establishing themselves. The solution to this therefore is to kill a certain number every year which is, in effect, doing the job that the wolves used to do in order to keep numbers down to sustainable levels and allow forest regeneration projects to succeed.
As I say just an excuse to shoot birds. We are discussing Magpies & Songbirds, I fail to see how their interaction has changed.

If we back off nature will find a balance. There is no need to kill birds to save other birds. By that rational it would be better to mass kill humans. The interaction has changed because of bird feeding. The magpies are alpha feeders at the birdtable, and thus a higher population level is sustained, which has an effect on their periodic prey species.

Do you want to jump, do you realy want to jump...Got it in one. Maybe the principled element will show the way by throwing themselves off the nearest cliff.

You just don't get it, do you Patrick?Got it in one. Maybe the principled element will show the way by throwing themselves off the nearest cliff.
I thought the game was to kill the problem not the solution. You just don't get it, do you Patrick?
When they talk about killing humans, they mean other humans, not themselves. Oh no siree, not themselves.
Someone else.
