Bugger!

Except the LTP, you're close.

As an aside (and don't take this the wrong way), but the older I get, the more I find myself looking over the top of my specs when I am looking at stuff close up. Your avatar kind of made me think of this

I haven't taken it the wrong way, although I should point out I am only 19 years old, or so.

Actually I have to look over my specs to see things far away. If I want to look at something really close I wear additional pairs of reading glasses. Four pairs is a bit like wearing a microscope, but I wouldn't recommend it if meeting an important client. Good for opening the door to a Jehovah's Witness though.

Knowing from these pages that I will turn into a road monster if I pick the wrong make, can I please have some recommendations for cars that will reflect my reputation as a safe and caring driver?

Economical, unassuming, safe, reliable, comfortable, capacious, roof bars ?? Put deposit down on one yesterday and should be picking it up early next week = Honda Accord Tourer 2.2 i-DTEC GT.

Compares well to the BMW and Volvo V70s we use at work, but was cheaper.

The MOT came in at just over £300, including a bit of welding needed to keep the 1989 Volvo together for another year and a bracket for the exhaust to replace my temporary lash-up with fence wire.

Yes, the monster is the driver. I'm obviously not the only one who is jaded by the lazy categorising of dangerous drivers by the cars they wear, BMW/Audi/Golf/4x4 etc etc. VamP has listed a number of offending motors that don't often appear in the horror stories here, and I'm sure if we listed all cars mentioned we'd have a full set. With the exception of the motorised sofa - or does someone have a really interesting tale to tell?

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, and offers - I hadn't expected so may second-hand car salesmen to come out of the woodwork! I'll stick with the Volvo estate for now. Many's the time I've thrown 2 or 3 bikes in the back and bimbled down to the New Forest in the middle lane of the M27 - a grand day out! Do flash me if you see me, you'll be my first CCer spottted.
That's good going for the old girl. I had a Subaru Forester that just kept going and going. 15 years and a nephew is still getting good service from it. I like cars that are over-engineered, they just cope with anything. I like my Outback even better because I don't use up so much fuel with it.

... every day is a winding road...

Long sighted @19. I first started wearing specs when I was 19, but it went the other way for me. I've worn reading glasses with contact lens's which is a bit weird when you get so used to dropping your glasses to look at things so close up.

Depending on how many people you need to transport;

Smart ForTwo CDi
Skoda Fabia Greenline 1.2 TDi

Both are £0 RFL and cheap as chips to run! Both accept bike carriers

The next car I buy will be £0 RFL & cost next to nowt to run! I couldn't give two hoots about cars, as long as they're reliable!

Sorry Linford, I should have added a smiley. The 'or so' means give or take 40 years.

I am an ex-Audi driver. There, it's off my chest and I feel better for it^_^

Not hugely relevant to the topic but having recently gone from driving the Audi (an A5) to a Renault Clio it's really noticeable how much more often I get other drivers pulling out in front of me. Either I'm not as visible or, more likely in my opinion, I'm seen as less 'threatening' in my litttle inoffensive runaround!

Yep, I find that with cars I have driven too.

Just extrapolate downwards to bicycle + rider sized objects and I think we can see a problem (or not see, possibly).

Did you just say Road Fund Licence? Tut tut, naughty cloggsy. All cars currently on the road are £0 RFL.

Skoda Fabia VRS (TD) - easy to park, frugal, reliable, handle well, good performance (Clarkson reckoned it was quicker around a track than the supercharged Mini Cooper S as yardsick measurement), well screwed together, Holds residual value well etc etc. What is not to like ?

I was taught to drive in an Audi and I'm still OK.

It was a 1970s Audi 80 Estate, which was really a Series 1 Passat with a nicer radio. This was before Audi had taken over the world; it was a UK-only model for people who wanted a Passat but with a posher badge. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose....

I remember my late father (despite being a fluent German speaker with the requisite grasp of Latin) calling it an Ordy. You don't hear that any more.
