Well, you will insist on using candles.

I really thought that we were going to get it this time ... It was very sunny earlier, then it got very humid and the clouds started to build. It was so dark just now that I needed to put the lights on in the house. I have been watching the display on LightningMaps.org, however, and the storm seems to be about 55 km NW of here at the moment so I think it might just sneak past again.

Perhaps I am a bit slow but I suddenly realised what the expanding, fading circles on the LM display represent - thunderclap wavefronts! I want to see if I hear a bang when the display shows that I should but the storm needs to move closer for that.
Well, I can confirm that LightningMaps.org works ... I had the website loaded in a different tab and just heard a mighty clap of thunder. I whizzed over to that tab and saw a thunder shockwave heading towards Burnley, originating from a lightning strike over Huddersfield way!

Ooh, ooh, ooh - what was THAT! 2 loud bangs almost at the same moment and a confused rumbling sound afterwards ... Ha ha - near-simultaneous strikes at Mytholmroyd and Walsden a few miles from here!

Nothing to damage in any of them!

I have been out on the hills round those places today and saw several stretches of road covered with piles of mud and grit which were not there a few days ago. There must have been an awful lot of water rushing down the hillsides in that storm!

Council will be along to clear the drains. Sometime!
