What have you planted today ?

Mrs VC has started the broad beans, and we've got some Anya potatoes chitting. That's all we're doing this year.

Started leeks off today, slashing it down though so not a lot else new. One good thing about that winter was that it killed a lot more weeds that in a normal winter.

Today I have put mu onions and shallots it while Bikepete put up the frame for the green house. I have also finished of digging over the site and sowed some green manure seeds as well.

Busy day today. Tomorrow we will be cleaning the frame and the glass.

I've put some cleome seeds in the propagator and started off some nasturtiums. I like flowers as well as veg.

Sod all. It's been raining. Might get down the allotment tomorrow if it's better.

Got some potatoes and onions in last week, broad beans, leeks. Not much else so far.

Off to collect the glass for the greenhouse today, it needs to be cleaned. Can't wait till its all up so we can reclaim the utility room for doing laundry.

well, I finished building out greehouse on Thursday. and it's our first one so we're quite excited.

In the last couple of days we have planted the seed for:
- Heavy cropper peppers
- Mixed fancy peppers
- Jalepeno peppers
- Lettuce
- Runner Beans
- Courgettes
- 3 types of tomato
- Geraniums
- Asters
- Clematis

And our seed potatoes are chitting away ready to go into their planters in a week or so.

Our Victoria plum tree has hundreds of tiny buds coming through, hoping for a good crop...

Looking forward to all this home grown veg! Haven't had any since we moved.
Must get building the raised veg beds though... time limit now with the seeds already planted!

I've got a very quick potting compost question please.

I'm just about to put some herb seeds in little pots and wonder if it's worth getting proper potting compost for this or to use the general purpose stuff. It's Miracle Gro peat based stuff* if that makes a difference.

* I wouldn't have bought it but got given two bags when someone moved house.

It shouldn't make too much difference if you sieve it, the finer the particles of growing media you use the greater chance the seedlings have at pushing themselves through to the surface.

Peat based growing media is the best, don't know what the amateur gardener will do after 2012 when its to be banned.

Thanks Gromit, I went ahead and used it anyway, I did crumble it for the top dressing bit.

Both early and maincrop potatoes are in (Maris Peer and King Edward). First early carrots are coming along nicely, as are early peas under fleece. Onions are in and starting to sprout. Leeks are started off at home, and tomatoes and chillis started off in Dad's greenhouse. Blueberry bushes are starting to shoot.

I know I've got my timing well off, but this is my first year with an allotment and I'm experimenting.

Today we moved a trampoline onto the old veg plot, planted a willow dome and dug a pond where the trampoline used to be. Will be moving the veg plot to a sunnier side of the garden soon.

Hope to get potatoes and carrots in at the allotment tomorrow, onions and broad beans will follow soon.

Yeh Bikepete and I have got the green house fully assembled ready for all my seedlings to be taken over to the allotment on Wednesday. Our utility room is going to be a utility room again.
