What hybrid to get Claud Butler or a Ridgeback?

I have been looking at a range of different hybrid bikes. I will be using the bike to commute and to do longer distances on the weekend. All on road or cycle path riding. I only have £300 to £400 to spend which I know is not a huge amount but unfortunately that is all I have at the moment.
I have been looking at the Ridgeback Speed and the Claud Butler Legend. I am not sure if either is of any good and if I am missing a better bike. I need some help!

:welcome: I'd go for the Ridgeback but only cos I've got an old CrMo steel one that's fantastic.

If money is tight I would suggest you should consider the Carrera Gryphon http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/hybrid-bikes/carrera-gryphon-hybrid-bike-2011-2012-large-21 £380. Nicely finished and spec'd bike with disc brakes. I would urge you not to consider a model with suspension forks, they are just not worth the extra weight and don't afford any extra comfort. The Ridgeback range are also very good as @raleighnut suggests but chances are you might have a Halfords local to you where you can check it out. They should be able to advise on sizing. Don't forget the lights, lock and helmet.
