The OP: That's the same route, more or less than me, on a good day about 20 mph... On a bad day like yesterday, getting home is more important than the MPH! Garmin said yesterday avrage was 16.7 MPH

How do you measure wind direction/speed?
I just take it off the Met Office website, combined with observation, e.g. "Gusty SW" or "Light N". I merely do that so if I get a particularly good or bad time for a ride I can compare it with others to see if the wind might have affected it.

My All time PB is 17.8mph total and 18mph moving over 14.7 miles and 478ft climbing and roughly the same decending. Fresh legs and tail wind. 49.04 moving time

Over 2750 miles my total avg is 15mph over the last 28 days (440 miles) 16mph.

To break my record I have to hit Starbucks 3.8 mile to home marker by 38ish minutes.

Like I said earlier do not get hooked on stats as you will be forever looking and trying to hit targets take from someone who has tried and failed to break the habbit!!

ASP can pick that apart if they like :hello:

99% of my cycling is 14.7 miles to and from work hardly any social riding

I average 15 - 16 mph for 16 miles each way with 240m ascent going out and 150m ascent coming back. That's my "long commute" which I do roughly once a week on a road bike carrying a rucksack. The rest of the time I bike-train-bike it and pootle along on a Brompton. I run my garmin on autostop ('cos the numbers are better if you do that  ).

What is this autostop yee speak of? Mine has time elapsed and moving time. Must admit that all the overall stats take elapsed time and not moving time, but I am trying to cure thy self of stat watching!

There's a setting (in my Garmin at least, which is the Edge 705) where you can turn on 'Autopause'. When the bike is not moving, it pauses the timer, and then restarts it when you move (this being determined by the spoke magnet passing the sensor). So your time is not altered by being sat at a red light for 3 minutes for example.

So basicly it turns every cycle run in to moving time as opposed to elapsed and moving?

Yes, I suppose so, but per an earlier post you should also be able to see the elapsed time in Garmin Connect (or check your watch when you set off and when you arrive).

i got 15mph moving average on a leisurly cycle to bath and back this morning before work (22.5 miles with a mate) showed 13 mph on normal average which is strange as we only stopped to turn around and come back and for 1 pedestrian crossing!

You can guarantee that any post quoting average speeds will subjected to scrutiny by the ASP (Average Speed Police) to ensure absolute accuracy. Things that are likely to lead to inflated 'averages' are one-way routes (tailwinds or downhill), miscalculation of distance, or cherry-picking of recorded rides. These are the tell-tale clues that the ASP look for.

Is now a good time to mention that my fastest recorded speed (on my cat eye) is 88mph!

My commute is rural and city - about 11 miles each way. An average speed is about 16mph. But if I go down the dual cariageway and do not use the cycle way into the city I can do 20mph. So the lights and junctions make a big diffrence.

It also depends what you ride. If I ride my hybrid I average about 2mph less than my carbon road bike.

I get home faster than I get to work - even though home is 70m higher up. Motivation is everything!

7.5mile door to door rural commute no traffic lights average half an hour at @15mph.
One beautiful morning some years back, towards the end of summer so at 'peak' fitness and with gentle tailwind, scorched in to beat 25 minutes on 531ST framed Galaxy with guards, rack and rack top bag. 18mph average! Pick the bones out of that, Wiggins.
Mind, there were giants in the land in those days.

I don't really have an average for mine. I take all sorts of routes depending on my mood/schedual for a start. Plus I start at different times on different days, traffic can be light or heavy.
The shortest route TO work on a 6.30am start has seen me do it in about 3mins for example, but then the same route today took 12mins due to traffic. Sometimes I am just being lazy and go at a snails pace.
Then sometimes I take an 8mile route, a 12, and a 20ish when I start late in the day
