The X5 is like a 5 series Beemer with a suspension lift, bulkier body and an AWD system. That doesn't make it anything like a Landrover, and it certainly isn't a capable 4x4 in a utility role.

Before the X5's came along, what sort of car do you think these people were driving ? - a good guess IMO would be probably a mondeo, or a vectra.

I did ask earlier, but the older versions were just e39 5 series on stilts weren't they? I think the new one has its own platform?

I think that the current one still shares a chassis with the 5 series. It's not a 5 series chassis per se as I think the 6 series is built on the same thing. The days of one unique chassis per line are long gone.

EDIT: Just found myself a thing called Google. (Glibness aimed at myself) Turns out that the 5, 6, 7, X5 are all essentially the same chassis.

All have a monocoque chassis though, and that is something which just isn't up to the job where a real 4x4's abilities are required.

An opinion that JLR don't agree with, having just launched the new Range Rover with an aluminium monocoque chassis. (I'll readily concede that you'll be unlikely to find one off-road other than at a shoot or a point-to-point, but the capability is there.)

They have used it to save weight.
I have designed ally extrusion tools in the day job for nearly 20 years for my sins so i have a little bit of insight in the limitation of the material.
The disco4 has a regular steel chassis as it was designed with utility in mind. I've never seen a vogue pulling a trailer at any of the hundreds of horse meetings iive done over the years. Id be interested to see the towing capacity of a new one

Undoubtedly, given that the 420kg saving is trumpeted in the press releases. They also mention that the towing rating is unchanged at 3,500kg. FWIW, I often see a v.recent AutoBiography RR at Pony Club pulling an Ifor 'box.
