My local supermarket (Morrisons) has a particularly brilliant car park design. Not......

Obviously drawn up by someone who doesn't drive, cycle or shop. It features a narrow entrance road, often blocked by cars trying to turn into the petrol forecourt, narrow aisles and a zebra crossing right outside the shop entrance, so trying get into the car park by car is like doing your whole hazard perception test for a driving test in one go, as pedestrians and trolleys cross your path at all angles.

And as for the cycle racks, well don't get me started on them..... Obviously, the designer never went shopping by bike either.

It took me a little time to adjust to supermarket car parks when on holiday as a pedestrian in western Canada. Over there pedestrians ruled (politely!), and drivers always gave way when manoeuvring or driving through car parks.

The new Sainsbury's that has been built locally does seem to have given at least some consideration to pedestrians and cyclists. There are covered walkways through the middle of the car park, and ample cycle parking. THe only problem I had was actually getting in to the place in the first place, there didn't seem an obvious ped/cycle entrance -but I found it later, cleverly marked with foot prints, but hidden somewhat in the shadow of the petrol station.
Asda's haven't given so much as a fence post to tie a bike to.

How strange, when I started reading that I looked at your location, thinking you must live near me, as yo have just described my local Morrisons car par exactly! Maybe Morrisons secretly hate their customers and design their carparks so that we all kill each other!

I bet that you could drive straight on, into the carpark, if you were able to. Emerging into the carpark at the exit of the petrol station. Which just happens to be near the entance to the store!!

Yebbut...even when it's free to park there's no walkways.
If my memory is still working correctly (ok don't all laugh at once ) the store I was based at worked out thateach parking space was worth £9.000.00 per year so now this is the really bright bit if they took away all the flower beds walk ways etc this would then make 12 extra spaces therefore another £108000.00per anum turn over for that store ! So this is why there are no walk ways they cost them lost revenue I DON'T THINK SO lol.

Another thing about supermarket car parks is why are people so lazy when it comes to returning trolleys. What's so difficult about placing them in the trolly park bit instead of leaving them abandoned all the car park so they can roll about, banging into cars and generally getting in the way.

Morrisons have it right with their £1 slot thing to release the trolly, don't return the trolly you lose a quid.

They do I was thinking the same too and peered as the Warminster one is like that and so is the one near Hythe, but the Portsmouth one is not purpose built and used to have those big furniture stores there so they just have the car park that was already there and no petrol

All of them near here do that now.

Although it was weird when Mum & I did big shopping and tried Farm Foods, big car park at back of shop (it was in one of those little sort of out door shopping areas) did shopping, left them with shopping go back to car, pull car up to back entrance and they bring your trolley out for you we were very impressed with it, saved trying to push fully loaded trolleys with minds of their own across slopey car parks
