Yesterday I rode 45 miles ish in horrendous conditions...yet as usual there were still guys out there riding in shorts and tshirt!! maybe I'm a wimp or something, but how do these people survive hyperthermia at the moment?

Maybe it's amacho thing...

yesterday i saw a guy on a really cool carbon bianchi, riding in the driving rain, cold, dark, surface water over 2" deep...in bianchi summer shirt and shorts and a cap...what is all that about?? I had a full nightvision jacket, two merino base layers, longs, over shoes and two layers of gloves and I was still frozen to the core!

Is it just me then?

"shorts brigade" ??? Come on, I don't know what the degree temperature was but to each there own eh?

I can understand shorts and short sleeves in the p*ssing rain if it's not so cold. Admitted, I'm not one of life's hard nuts, and would be in longs for temperatures below, say, 8c but I'd defend the rights of others to do as they please..... daft buggers! ;)

I have no idea how they do it, unless they are only out for a quick 10 miles.

I just tried cut a ride short today as I was shivering while cycling up a hill hard I was that cold, and that was in longs and a baselayer and waterproof. The wind round here is about 30mph and icy cold.

2 layers of merino (trying out the cheapo dhb base layer got in the sales), and windproof waterproof with longs and leggings and still bloody cold here. The pure wool handknit (as opposed to high tech) fingerless gloves surprisingly warm, though. (Lost my cycling gloves - didn't get round to replacing em). Think I'm sticking with knitted gloves for winter, as they worked so well today.

s'alright boab, ignore me, it's the use of the word 'brigade' like that that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand! I knew what you were saying, there's some hardy souls out there!;)

40 years ago I would have been out in shorts and T shirt. Not now though. Then - average speed 25mph over 100 miles, now average speed 12mph over 20 miles on a good day.

The big difference in clothing comes from the reduction in waste heat my body's producing.

Then - difficulty geting rid of excess heat even in winter unless temperature dropped below 0 degrees.
Now - difficulty keeping enough heat in if the temperature drops below 10 degrees.

I once cycled to the Tan Hill Inn on New Year's Day in shorts. It was a tad cool on the way up from Reeth, while in the pub it started to snow which then turned to sleet then rain. My return to Reeth was on roads awash with water and I seriously considered asking for refuge at several house as I cycled past. A short stop in a roadside hut and a drink of hot coffe from my flask revived flagging spirits and I arrived back in Reeth dripping wet and high from adrenaline.

I've never done the ride in winter since without spare layers of clothing.

I wear shorts nearly every day for my commute. I'll wear longs for longer rides like today's century as there's likely to be some stopping and hanging around. My commute is 40 mins of flat out (apart from stopping for lights) so my body stays fairly warm. The other thing is I always look after the extremities and the core as they are the places that need to be kept warm.

A further consideration is that Cristiano Ronaldo used to be able to run around for 90 mins in shorts in Manchester in winter and as he's not exactly a hard man I think I'll cope.

That's the advantage of being an unfit old knacker, i start sweating about 100 yards from the house and don't stop until about an hour after i get to work.
