How about a Whyte Caledonian, or a Chiltern older models on deal?

Or a 29er (dealer in Cheshire), probably fails on tyres but if you want something rugged for trails, go proper rugged

I'm not sure what a remote lockout is? Although I can guess

Do you really want another Giant?

Those Whytes really look the part dont they..............will have a serious look at them.

1) Remote lockout may not be the correct technical term but its a lever/switch to lockout/switch off the suspension. The best/easiest way is to have the lever mounted on the bars but many have them mounted on top of the suspension pillar...............this (to me) would mean taking my eye off the path to locate the lever.

2) Dont really "want" another Giant but if it was the right bike for the right price I would have it.

You don't switch it on and off constantly to go over bumps. You would stop to alter if changing terrain for any length of time, it's not like gearing. If it's going to be locked more than unlocked, then arguably there may be little point in having suspension. If riding almost always off road then, there is no need to change it often

Very true.........I did think along those lines but with my previous (stolen) bike having remote on the bars it just seems a backwards step.

Can't you just get the current model of the stolen bike (whatever that was?)

The stolen bike was a Decathlon Rockrider 8.1. It was good. However ..........I have realised that I dont need the big tyres/chunky frame & wheels as (at 67 yrs old) the hardest conditions will be as stated........Penine Way/tow paths/light forrest trails. Therefor I'm looking more hybrid with lockout suspension and either 700 or 27.5" semi slicks.
