I have an outside thermometer on my bedroom window so I can judge what to wear, so low temperatures don't really bother me. If it's really cold I wear the thermal lycras/jacket/overtrousers/gloves/necktube/skull cap etc etc. Once you get moving you generate your own heat. The hardest thing is to get the balance so you don't overheat. I will cycle now matter how cold so if it dropped to, say -15, I'd still cycle to work.

Of course I have the extra wheel which eliminates the possibility of me falling off!

only the risk of ice would stop me (in this country, it might be a bit too cold in some countries)

Mrs Uncle Phil and I were cycling to work the year before last when it was somewhere below -10. We've got photos of us growing ice on our eyelashes and, in my case at least, on my stubble. And yes, various bits of the bikes froze up. One day I left my fixie outside, which was a mistake. The snow that had stuck to hit had frozen solid and when I came to go home, the wheels wouldn't go round. I had to take it into the workshop and pour hot water over it to get it moving.

I've cycled into work when it was minus 15 for a number of days in Jan 10 (when I got the studded tyres). Cycling in full winterkit, with waterproofs over the top kept me warm in the deep snow. At one point noticed my left foot getting cold, looked down and the overshoe had flipped up off the toe.

There's probably some theoretical lower limit where bits of the bike start seizing up. Above that, I will cycle but as others have said, ice is the issue.

According to the met it was -8deg C when I cycled in last Monday but it was dry, today was only -2deg C but wet/slushy and I walked

I think the lowest I've had is -8[sup]o[/sup]C

To be honest there's very little that stops me commuting to work because in the conditions I may wimp out, the conditions would also be causing a traffic jam* so driving would take forever.

*The road to my employer is massively under capacity and tends to snarl up half the county every morning and evening

One of my colleagues a couple of years back told me her car thermometer was reading -15 as she passed me, very very early one morning. Its a little dip that is always a few degrees colder for half a mile or so.

I'll ride in anything as I'm happy to layer up and keep as little skin as possible showing. Its easy not to be cold.

depends on the route. a downhill high speed commute will have a lot of windchill. uphill low windchill and lots of effort to keep you warm!

I live in ruralish Northants but work in London. Can be -5 here but barely freezing between Euston and Lincoln's Inn.

So I take the bike everyday and if it's rally bad in town use the tube with folded B. Probably happened for three days in last fifteen years.
