What is the noise?

A noise I can't replicate. But, you know when your coat sleeve rubs the main body of your coat, you get that high pitched... Well, rubbing noise. Almost a squeak.

My chain is doing this and I have no idea why. Does it every 2-3 pedal revolutions and stops when I stop pedalling. It sounds almost like the chain is slipping or gently rubbing past something quickly. It's driving me crackers.

Any ideas on remedy?

Or get it on a stand and pedal it whilst looking.

Saying that, the sleeve rubbing may be tyre on chain stay.

Definitely not the front dérailleur.

shoot, never thought about the tyre. That sounds depressing. What would cause that?

2-3 pedal revs is usually about the time it takes for the chain to arrive back at the same point that it started. So look for a stiff link, or bent link, or something.

I'm thinking I might have nailed in on the head already. Powerlinks are apparently not reversible. So, potentially I may have reinstalled my chain with the links backwards.

Yes. I used to get it the second Wednesday of every month, now I get one of the ladies at the club to apply a generous quantity of lube after getting changed into my club gear and that's cured it.

Not necessarily. I've had a wheel come loose in only its drive-side dropout (not quick-release) and higher gears pulled the wheel out of line enough for the tyre to rub, but only when pedalling - while freewheeling, it wasn't so far out... but then it happened every pedal rev, which isn't what's described in the OP.

Yeah I always thought it was more likely to be chain related due to the frequency of the noise ocurring. Will strip the gears down today, full degrease and lube. See if that cures anything.

In reading the opening gambit, I was going to suggest checking the front dérailleur cable isn't rubbing the tyre. This would happen continuously in theory though. I had it before, after adjusting and couldn't think why the noise was there in the big ring but not the small ring. Lol.

My money is on your shorts rubbing on the seat where the thigh contacts each revolution.

Happens out of the saddle.

Degreased and lubed the chain today. Noticed that my 'SRAM' power link links are actually 'KMC'. Problem? Maybe. They were a freaking nightmare to clip back on. Either way, haven't had a chance to ride today. Maybe later
