The clips at the back of it broke and had to remove it.

Sits at back of gear ring cog (ha ha) on back wheel.

Do I need one? What do I look for on the wiggle machine?

easy and cheap to replace and widely available on the net advertised as a spoke protector or similar and it is to simply stop your chain over shifting when changing into bottom gear and getting tangles up in the spokes and potentially buggering the rear wheel. but as said if gears are set up properly them no need for it
Cheers Ed

One on wiggle says it's designed for a '36 hole free hub'. How do I know if that's what I've got? Count the holes?

Count the spokes,

but the one on wiggle is a Shinamo branded one so I'd assume you'd need Shinamo hubs too.

Save you money and don't bother TBH

You really don't need one. Don't waste your money.
If you really do want one, go to your lbs and ask if they have one spare.
