What item of clothing would it break your heart to lose?

Here for rides.
All material things decay.

But right here right now I'd be gutted if I lost my Swedish leather and real fur Ushanka hat that I plucked from the bargain bucket of a local outdoor clothing store a few weeks ago.

It is -10 outside and a tidy walk back to my hotel. Just long enough that, sans hat, if it is windy I feel the need to cover my ears with my gloved hands.

I have a Tweed cap I bought in Skipton Market in 1988. I wear it every time I go shooting. The lining is a bit scratty, and the inside is greasier than a scrap-man's dog, but I have so far managed to resist several concerted attempts to replace it by others less able to understand the meaning of sentiment. It holds its shape perfectly, and appears to have retained its waterproof qualities, although the water soaking back out of it has taken on a strange colour over the last ten years or so.

I have a pair of Berghaus keks that are an unusually good fit on my stumpy legs. The trousers are about 12years old. I'm wearing them now.

About 5 years back I was wearing them in Stansted for an early morning flight to Tenerife. We were told to repackage our bags by the nice lady at check in, but once we'd done it, go back to the front of the queue.

We decamped to the side and I crouched down.... RRRRIIIIPPPPPPP!
The whole under carriage had gone! I wasn't happy with the world!
We we repacked the bags and went to the front of the queue where a bloke took offence to us pushing to the front as instructed.
I wasn't aware that I was giving him too much of a dirty look but the poor fella withered, shrunk and whimpered in an instant. I smiled at him cordially.

Once home Jo's mate did an A1 fix on my keks.

It'll be a sad day...

My Scott and Fox hiking jacket my lady wife bought for me eighteen years ago, it still looks like new today despite being heavily used every winter.

I had a particlarly fine pair of Loake country-weight brogues; the 3rd such pair I'd owned - finally ready for the bin after something like 6 re-soles . Loake don't make that model anymore and though they make other perfectly OK brogues I really liked that pattern. Harrhumph!

Have to make do with rather more expensive Crockett and Jones (even when there's a deal on) now, and though they're genuinely higher quality I still preferred my old Loakes.

I was reminded recently of the time I left my 25-year-old leather jacket in the pub. When I went back an hour later, they produced it from behind the bar. I have rarely been so relieved in my life. The only thing that comes close is my walking boots...

I've had them for over 30 years, and if anything happened to them, I'd be bereft. Do you have any items of clothing that are almost like old friends?
I too have a very old pair of boots, bought with my grant money from Cotswold Outdoor on Oxford Road in Manchester whilst I was studying at UMIST. They were bought in '91, so not quite as old as yours, but they have seen many miles and had tins of Nikwax lovingly applied.

2 items; a long sleeved rugby shirt that my daughter gave me. It has her regimental colours and logo on it and a polo shirt belonging to my late mum from her Line dance club which has her name embroidered on it.

Dubbin, melted on the stove and applied with a toothbrush. I was in the Scouts you know.

Both soles have come off at different times, but I googled and got some special (and fiendishly expensive) glue, since when they've been good as new. Better - 'cos of course they fit me to perfection now. I bought mine in 1983 before going off to trek around NZ. Very costly they were. Worth every penny.
