How about checking out what Decathlon have in?
At least you'll be able to kick the tyres on them, and do a lap of the store (inside only please).

I bought an '87 Rockhopper, from the classified section of the local rag, for £40. Bargain!

When I decided to commute through the winter, I picked up a basic Decathlon Rockrider. Well built and decent quality for the price. Put some better tyres on it and away I went.

Or there is this on ebay. Seems genuine.

Certainly honest about it

Super cheap super crap second hand bike.
Venture Switchback 24"

As you can see this bike has seen better days, Started life cheap and nasty now its even worse.

Bad Parts,

Rear tyre is bald,
chain and other parts rusted almost solid.
Heavy as hell
Has the words Scrap and Crap written on it in marker pen,
Gears dont work
Plastic front brake
Cables sticky
small hole in saddle

Good bits:

Shimano rear brake (worth more than the bike probbably)
Wheels are round
Suspension hasn't siezed up yet!
Crud racegaurd on the back!

If it doesn't sell well attack it with big hammers and saws
If it does sell you can attack it with hammers and a saw (its good fun) and we'll have a pint.

If you buy it expecting to ride it away into the sunset and live happily ever after then think again, it'll need some tlc first.

All proceeds will be used to fund our enty into Next years British Pedalcar Grandprix in New Milton Hampshire

£150 is a bit of a problem area from what I remember when i was buying my first bike. You have the choice of a new bike thats going to be heavy and have poor components, or second hand or worse that may well have problems or bits needing fixing, pushing the total cost up to £200+.

Also worth considering that although you may only want it for the poor weather now, but if you spent the extra bit you could have another bike that allowed you to try out another discipline, like trail or XC MTBto compliment the CAAD road bike.

Althgough they get some stick from people that have an Halfords chimp build it, their Carrera bikes are decent and have components that are usuall in the price bracket above for the "big names", for example a £380 Kraken gets full SRAM X5 shifters and derailiers, where the big names will probably have Shimano Alivio.

1. I am not interested in trying other disciplines. I may have some use other than commuting on a non road bike in a few years when my daughter is old enough to ride a bike.

2. I agree, having a further look around they look a good 2nd hand buy. I have been offered one for £140 which I will probably take.
