Thomas Tallis - 'Spem in Allium' ('Hope in Everything'). So beautiful and complex, it is almost overwhelming. I can't help crying when I listen to it. It might be the most perfect use of the human voice. (Technically, it's a motet, for 40 voices in eight separate choirs of five, who interweave their voices before coming to a perfect harmony).

Competely different, but just a pure explosion of hope - Curtis Mayfield - 'Move on Up!'

And for other reasons again, Billie Holiday - 'Im a fool to want you' from Lady in Satin, when her voice was almost entirely gone and she had nothing left at all except all her bitter experience.

I heard this on Desert Island Discs a while ago. Kirsty Young was struggling to contain herself after the clip finished, and I can understand why. I think it was the Nina Simone version I heard, but Billie Holliday's original is just as good.
