Which one would you choose and why, I have a £1000 budget?

I'd incline towards the Giant as they've a knack of making a bike perform beyond its paper specs, but id still want to try both before getting my wallet out.

Unless they've improved the Boardman, I'd go for the Giant.
The Boardman CX is my least favourite bike. The wheels lasted half the mileage of my Allez, the brakes underperformed, and she doesn't carry her weight well.

I would go for the boardman as the spec is far better than the giant......especially with sram 1x11 and hydraulic disc brakes. Its a no brainer for me

If more for road have a look at bikes like the GT grade and Specialized Diverge as they ride fine on or off road. Traditional CX bikes can have a less comfortable road position but work very well off road on typical CX tracks / trails.

That's Cycling plus though. How many of their staff were reviewing model railways or washing machines two years ago, and how may have exactly the same physical atteibutes (height, weight, dimensions, fitness, injuries etc) as out OP.

Never make a buying decision based on what some joker has written in a chipwrapper.

How about worrying about the most important component first? The frame, something Boardman do not have a consistently good record with for simple elements, such as rigidity.

He's really needs to get out and ride these machines, and not make his buying decision on one or other component being shiny-shiny.

As above, try them both out. Yes the Boardman has better specs but the Giant has perfectly good brakes (and general spec) and will do the job just fine. However, if it was my money and wasn't bound to a retailer for C2W, I'd look elsewhere.

Very true as is most magazine reviews a lot depends on who is paying advertising space or that months loan bike, new free goodies etc. But then much the same as a forum. Views are always slightly biase. Problem with cycles is the elusive 'test ride' so many refer to doesn't exist. If your lucky a spin round the car park. I find the best reviews is from owners, past owners or someone who has experience of the particular bike. Not always easy to find. Admittedly I read the same cycling plus review and the Whyte scored poorly in the same test. MTB demo bikes are rife round me and in the lakes strangely but no roadies or CX
