What should I do in Munich next week?

Well on Tuesday I'm off to München for six days.

Evenings are sorted - I'm attending four concerts (all the St John Passion by JS Bach with Andreas Scholl (Countertenor) and Mark Padmore (Tenor)).

However my days are free. I love the German Technical Museum but have visited it several times. I'm not into art galleries at all, but do like some museums. Has anyone got any recommendations?

Yes. Get into art galleries. Go up close and see how the paintings are constructed, then stand back and be amazed!

I can recommend lunch in the Prinz Myshkin, whether or not you are veggie, it's fantastic food and a big relief after a few days on the pig knuckles.

I love wandering round the town, starting from the Marienplatz, up towards the Frauenkirche, along Wienstrasse, up towards Odeonsplatz (wondering how things might have turned out differently in 1933) then through the gardens of Hofgarten, you can then cut across and lose a few hours in the Englischer Gartens, catching the Chinese tower. Then south along the Isar past the Peace Angel and head for the Deutsches Museum, then back, via the Isartor, to the Marienplatz.

Make use of the U Bahn and S Bahn, they are fantastic examples of how urban public transport should work, and wave as you pass my old office in Ismaning.

I tend to do lots of walking around and window shopping so undoubtedly I will do some of that, although with Hand Luggage Only I won't be buying much!

The beer is wasted on me, I'm teetotal, but I'll enjoy the cake!

Thanks for the suggestions all, I shall work out a plan. But art galleries still aren't my thang (although I'm told there's an excellent new one opened recentlyish).

Four Passions? Good heavens. That's some going.

As for what to do in Munich - I wish I knew. I've been there a dozen or more times and each time see the inside of the airport terminal (nice, if you like that sort of thing), the motorway (lovely, if you like travelling at 180kph) past the stadium (curious, especially given it lights up in different colours) to the hotel (Flemings - it's German). I then walk through the English Garden (manicured) to the office on Koeniginstrasse (it's an office), and if I'm really lucky get taken out for dinner.

One day I'll actually get to see the place.

Four Passions, one of which is free (the rehearsal).

I saw Scholl and Padmore in three Messiahs in Berlin Christmas 2008 and it was fab. Seeing three concerts like that enables you to really get to grips with the music and to enjoy it - and I noticed differences each day which added to the fun.

I've visited München several times before but never quite got to grips with the place - just shopping and Deutsches Museum and of course the airport!

Oh, that film! So sad and what a terrible ending. Saw it at the Cornerhouse in Manchester on one of their German Film seasons. Our lecturer used to introduce the films.

I never saw it, but I will seek it out.

I'm sorry for bringing a slightly sad suggestion to this thread, and I apologise. Munich is a fantastic city to visit. Bring it on, fun-wise...

Don't forget the possibility of day trips by train. Regensburg is a must and Augsburg is pretty good too. Then there's the Starnberger See and of course Füssen (Mad King Ludwig's Schoss and all that). And you have to eat in the Andechser restaurant and a wander around the Viktualienmarkt is pretty good too.
