What should I do in Munich next week?

Ah, I've always fancied visiting Füssen. I may struggle with time, though, to get back in time for the Passion. And I haven't visited Regensburg or Augsburg... Trying to have a cheapish holiday, though...

I've wandered around the Viktualienmarkt a few times - it's good fun and so wonderfully German!

If you go to the Die Bahn website, you'll see that you can get to Augsburg, Regensburg and Füssen in very short order indeed. In other words you can zoom off after breakfast, have loads of time for sightseeing and lunch and still be back with ages to spare before your concerts.

Füssen ~ 2hrs (it is a bit out in the sticks)
Starnberg is so close you get there by S-Bahn

The Johannes Passion is probably my most fav piece of music ever.

Bit Morbid maybe but the U Bahn goes out to Dachau from there.

English gardens I guess are a must...I got a horse and cart to take me around but I'm decadent like that!

I visited Dachau previously but I think it may deserve another visit. Although in the freezing cold...

I can't wait for the Johannes Passion, it will be wonderful! I haven't got that great a seat for the first two evenings, but tickets were pricy. I have a front row seat for the third concert though (in a different, smaller venue).

Well München is lovely - surprisingly warm (I had lunch and afternoon tea outside yesterday) and the first of the four St John Passion concerts was wonderful. Mark Padmore is unbelievably good as the Evangelist!

Last night I popped into Karstadt Sport and spotted a very dangerously large cycle clothing area. A new cycling waterproof is calling out to me... I may see if I can resist, but that is unlikely!

If you get to Augsburg the Fuggerei is well worth a visit. A religious almshouse complex of the 16th century.

Yep, Andy in Sig recommended it too. Not sure I'm going to get a chance as I seem to have a lot on, but we'll see.

Don't forget the Andechser restaurant. They do a nice bit of duck. And one of the best cafes in town is called Aran (Theatiner Straße 12) which is on one of the pedestrian drags but not the main one leading from the station. In fact go down the main one with the station behind you and then you come to that arch or just before it and then go left and there is also that huge indoor shopping arcade (Fünf Höfe) built around five walkways.

Well plans to visit Augsburg are now scuppered as I have to meet the chap who´s probablz buying our boat (who happens to live in München) to discuss the survey, sign the contract etc. That´s tomorrow morning, my only free spot for visits. So I shall be spending the whole time here in München.

The concerts are at the Herkulessaal which is very near Theatiner Straße so I shall see if I can persuade my evening companions to go there for a pre-concert cake. We went to several cafes in that area (can´t remember the names) after the concert yesterday afternoon and they were all full up. My two German companions were looking forward to seeing if I could get the Germans to make me some tea but with my own teabags - they thought I would be unsuccessful, but I haven´t been foiled yet! Needless to say, when we eventually found a cafe with some space (and cake), they gave me tea with my teabag and didn´t charge me for it.

The cafe we ended up in was right by one of the entrances to Fünf Höfe so I shall have a wanderround there later. I was going to buy myself a new Vaude cycling jacket from Karstadt Sport today but fortunately they don´t have my size so I´ve saved some money!

It's not a cake sort of cafe as in the traditional German sense: their thing is Kaffee und Brotkulture i.e. you can get delicious things on wholemeal bread and wash it down with a decent coffee but it's not a place to sit and be comfortable in the sense that I think you may be imagining. You'll probably like the Fuenf Hoefe but leave your credit card in the hotel.
