she should bang on about marginal returns. a £1200 bike is not going to be spectacularly better than a £800 bike. and a £1200 kitchen is not going to be great unless it's for a shoebox.

i hate to rule in favour of the wife, but the answer is probably spend the money on new doors/worktop (fitting them yourself) to save cash, and telling him that a new bike won't make a huge difference.

save up the man points for when a real upgrade is possible…

and you call yourself a cyclist ;) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well this is a tricky one! she could have method in her madness! like trying to fatten him up so he can't get on his bike, maybe this is why he's slowing down!

I wonder how many shoes and clothes this wife buys...

A year old £800 quid bike will do fine (unless he got ripped off with some pile of rubbish).

And people need new kitchens just as much as cyclists need new bikes - i.e. the older ones (kitchens and bikes) are probably perfectly fine!

Dear Kitchen Lover

Would you rather your husband was having an affair with a £1,200 bike or with a £200 a night bike when he gets bored?

Run and you might be able to a) beat him to the knocking shop and b) get a discount on last year's model.

Yours faithfully

She should place an advertisments in the lonely hearts section of the paper. She might need it when he realises that his bike fund has just paid for a new kitchen.
