What to do on this road?

It is a 20mph bridge with double white lines down the center.

But what should I do with regards to overtakes? Should I take primary straight away as it is illegal to overtake, or remain in secondary and just glare at the people who pass me?
I can easily keep upto 20 along the road so there isnt really a need for people to overtake, but noone sticks to 20.

Don't need to glare at anybody.

I would take secondary if clear of cars from oncoming direction and let them pass if they wish whether it's illegal or not, let them take the choice. If traffic oncoming then I would take primary.

Although, as it's only a 20 limit it should be you passing the cars

Be more aware of the vehicles round about you and let them overtake when its safe to do so (regardless of the 10mph rule or speed limit) slot in to the traffic stream near the top and there'll be no need to glare. Occasionally on hills like that if I feel its unsafe to overtake I hold a primary but pull into a secondary when its safe to do so and let the cars come through, most folk don't bother but occasionally you get somebody who thanks you and that feels nice. Rarely you do get a muppet who has been wrongly held up for 2 secs on their important mission to sit at the back of a queue and can spend 2 mins remonstrating the fact but hey ho c'est la vie .

Not sure why you are asking, as I would just ride as normal ie just under a metre from the edge of the road. I think you worry too much about what everyone else is doing and anyway it isn't illegal to overtake a cyclist even if it means the vehicle has to cross the white lines. Chill out Matthew and just enjoy riding, if you can easily do 20mph uphill I would think most drivers would be applauding you.

I don't think there's any problem with Matthew sharing the road, the problem seems to be the minority of drivers, motons, overtaking when they shouldn't. They aren't sharing the road as they should be, they are driving like Mr. Toad.

Maybe shoot an email to your council and suggest they make the pavement either side a shared use cycle/pedestrian path if that's a busy route? Would encourage more cyclists if they didn't want to hold up traffic.

With all due respect this is the type of attitude and ignorance that stinks. Unless you are going above a certain speed then it is not illegal to overtake, and as such if people were to overtake you legally, why would you glare at them?

'Cos (as he says) he can easily keep at 20. The 'certain speed' below which it is legal to cross solid white lines to overtake slow moving vehicles such as cycles, is 10mph. Above that it is illegal to cross the solid lines.

It may be me and apologies if it is but have some people missed the legality aspect? Which CrackedHS may be alluding to - NOt sure!

Now crossing my fingers and praying I am right (i.e. it hasn't changed) but it IS NOT ILLEGAL TO OVERTAKE IF THERE ARE DOUBLE WHITES!!! Doesnt matter what speed.

There are exclusions for CROSSING THE DOUBLE WHITES! THEY DO NOT MEAN NO OVERTAKING.

Why do so few people get this right?????? FFS/

I so do pray it hasn't changed and I am not going to have to grovel an apology but it can and is perfectly legal to overtake despite there being Double unbroken white lines; almost regardless of speed - i,e. speed limits etc.

From the Highway code.
Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road.
The part in red is the important bit (ok so is the safe to do so bit) So, under normal conditions overtaking is NOT allowed.

You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
So overtaking a vehicle is allowed if it is travelling at 10mph or less.
Ok in the real world, passing a cyclist on double whites if it is SAFE to do so is not a problem, whatever speed the cyclist is doing! Speed limits being observed obviously.
