What to wear ...

I find altura very reasonably priced and good quality, the Aldi stuff isn't as good fitting but is much cheaper. You could get away with two pairs of shorts/jerseys and rotate through the week, wearing them twice if you don't get too sweaty, otherwise get them washed on low temp and they should last you a season or two. Given autumn is fast approaching you will benefit from leg and arm warmers which will only need washing once a week unless you have perspiring limbs!

Making sure you try the stuff on as well if you're concerned about spending lots- I bought some Altura non-bib shorts from Evans and the pad was completely wrong for me, too far forward and ended up selling them on.
The DHB's I just got appear great on first couple of rides- they occasionally have them on good (half price) sales so keep an eye out.

bib shorts, i can't remember my first and only pair of waist shorts but I know I didn't like them at all

its not like anyone knows once you put a shirt over them

people are reluctant to wear proper cycle kit but as soon as you do it makes perfect sense
