Hi all,
I have had a Dogcam Sport cam and mini DVR for a few years and used to use it to record motorcycle tours. I've recently dug it out to record my commute on the bicycle and would like to cut the 40 min file into short sections for u-tube etc. It records in AVI (Mpeg 4/5) format. I've tried shed loads of free editors but have got nowhere. I don't mind paying for one if I can be assured that it works!

Anybody got any recommendation?

In what way did they not work?
I assume you've tried Windows Movie maker and Windows Live movie maker ?

Mostly they don't work as they freeze up when I import the AVI file (40mins long), If I import a small clip from the same camera, there is no problem. But I want to cut the 40 min film down so that's no help. I tried windoze movie maker, It worked after ages of waiting for playing (no fast forward) until I get to a cut point. It cuts, but then I have to wait 10 mins or so to play the new cut section.

Eventually I got a short section cut (of a taxi trying to wipe me off the face of the earth). I couldn't save it as a new file (Movie maker won't let you). You have to export it to file or email etc. When I exported it to file and played in WMP, the bottom half of the screen was green, and the top half played a stretched flat version of the video clip!

I have a modern laptop with 3 gig memory, lots of disk space and all the right codecs!

VirtualDub is free and allows you to edit AVI files, I have used with my dogcamsport bullet cam and mini dvr combo.
The latest version is 1.9.9.

You can cut, edit and do most things in Windows Movie Maker. I use it for editing my cycling vids with no problems.

It could be more to do with your processor speed and/or memory size.

I have a Dogcam Bullet HD and have exactly the same problem, short clips ok, full length recordings won't open in most editors. I've been in touch with Dogcam about it, unresolved as yet. However, video editing on a laptop is not to be recommended, few applications are as demanding and you'll struggle. I do mine on a desktop with a quad core i5-760 processor and 8GB ram, even then it's not exactly a quick process.
