St Alban was the first British Martyr, executed for sheltering a priest and being converted to Christianity by the priests example, He was led off to be executed, but finding a crowded bridge filled with spectators, St Alban caused the river around the bridge to be dried up, causing the soldier detailed to execute him to be converted to Christianity, and then refuse to execute him. Both were then executed at the site of St. Albans, causing the second executioners eyes to drop out. St Albans head, when it fell to the ground, caused a spring to well up at that spot.
