I ordered a few things online just before the new year from an online shop which shall remain nameless.
A e-mail was sent to be saying that the items have been packaged and sent.

BUT when they arrive only 2/3 of the items are in the box. I check the dispatch note and all the items i ordered are on there, and it doesn't say box 1 of 2 etc..

I contacted the online store stating that i only recieved 2/3 items and asked them to check if one was packaged seperatly. If it wasn't could they let me know the next course of action to get this resolved.

A propmpt response from them saying they have sent another one wasn't expected but i take it they checked there records and it was meant to be packaged together.

I rock up home last night, and i find 2 similar sized boxes waiting for me. I check one and it has no dispatch note, but has a stickered address label on it for me, dated the same date as the original package.

So i open the newest dispatch note and it is only one box. i open it and it's all correct.. So i have ended up with two items!

Now i know what i moraly should do. But what would you do? let them know the error of there ways or sell it on.

I don't want to keep it as it's rather large and i have no need for two of what i ordered.

You must, of course, let them know - anything else is morally indefensible and illegal

Seems they sent everything out on the same date as they said (even though items were packaged seperately), then sent a replacement item without any bother - seems that the mail was the problem. I'd send one back, happy with their customer service and use them again next time.

Cojtact them. Ask what they want done about the extra package. They'll either tell you how to return it with no cost to yourself, or they may lket you keep it if it's a hassle for them. That way you're 'above board'

Contact them and ask what they would have you do. If they require return of the items request they provide you with a postage paid bag. You do not have to return the item at your expense. On reflection they may decide to write off the cost of the extra item they sent you in error. They cannot charge you for it without your consent.

They had the good grace to send you a replacement, you should have the good grace to let them know the original turned up. And don;t worry about not naming them. With that good customer service, you should

A well known online bike shop did this to me last year, the first package sent without postage paid on it and I didn't find out till ages after I had received a replacement... they were so rude I kept both [ after paying about 8 quid extra on post to retrieve it from the sorting office [ eventually ] ] for a £25 purchase.

If they were polite and helpful rather than belligerent, even during the original purchase process when I paid over the phone they were swearing aggressively amongst themselves, I would have tried to come to an arrangement over the cock up...

Does anyone know which company I am talking about;)

Seconded. I have a mate who had a similar thing happen with a set of disk brakes, they accidentally sent him the brakes and refunded the money. He kept both. I always refer to them as his stolen disk brakes, because that's what they are.

or they may let you keep it

That's happened to me twice. Last year I ordered a special edition of Blade Runner from HMV. After about two weeks I phoned to say that it had not arrived and they gave me a refund as it was now out of stock.

I came off the phone and was telling my wife about it when there was a knock at the door! That's right, the DVD!!

I phoned HMV back and said "You're not going to believe this but as soon as I came off the phone the thing arrived!" The guy went and checked with his boss and told me that as I had been honest with them I could keep it with their compliments.

Money saved is soon forgotten but guilt lasts a long time.

I'm only asking what others would do, as i told a few friends and they said put it on ebay straight away. where as i was more inclined to let them know and ask them what to do with it.

Anyway the online retainer in this case is Wiggle. I asked them this morning what they want to do with it and am pending there response.
