My cousin is serving in Afghanistan and it's her birthday in a couple of weeks. So went out today to put some stuff together for a parcel

Managed to get everything I wanted in one local shop and the bill was £25.40.

The girl on the till had to key in the cost for me to pay by card. She keyed in £2.04 by accident.

I didn't notice until I got home and was sorting the stuff out and saw my card receipt. What would you do? Go back and come clean or say nothing and get another nice bday prezzie for cuz?

If it was one of the big chains then stuff 'em.

If a small independant retailer then upon your conscience be it

Depends on the proprietor. Our local had a batch of bad plastic bags which the owner was aware of - cue bottle of expensive spirits dropping out and smashing just outside. The girl on the till replaced the bottle only to be shouted at later on by the owner.

I don't own up to any of their errors now.

You can surely keep the stuff and send your cuz her well deserved present, and go back to the shop and pay the difference.

That's what I'd do. I'm all for local shops and I'm so friendly with them now they give me free stuff (like newspapers they haven't sold / give me credit etc.) I arranged work experience for their daughter (who was about 8 when they took over the shop) and she is now in medical school.

So definitely send your cousin the present but delight the local shop with your honesty. Keep shopping there and you'll find everyone's happy

If you had to ask us then you know you've got to go back.

Karma does work - and the feeling of satisfaction you'll get will be worth more than £20.

If they have CCTV and your card details, then they have everything they need to provide the police with evidence of obtaining a pecuniary advantage/fraud.

That seems a bit harsh CP.

Surely if you're undercharged by the shop it's their problem, not any fraud on Snapper's part!

That's the point of local shops for local people anyway. No need to involve CCTV / police etc, just politely agree the mistake and they will be delighted.

Next time they may overcharge you by accident in the same way and if you have built up a good relationship with local shops they will be much more relaxed about believing you.

If you receive an item, and find you have paid much less than you thought you should have paid, yes it is a mistake by the shop, but it is also theft/fraud as soon as you know about it - and don't hand over the rest of the cash.

It's the same as that bank in New Zealand putting $1m NZ into that couple's account by mistake, and they did a runner with it.

It is theft.

Not harsh, just how it is.

And how can that be proved?
