I have just finished reading the very first 3 of Henning Mankell's Wallanderr books. I'll have to buy more!!
What I hadn't realised is that they start off in January 1990. I had always thought they were relatively modern, but already I've read about 'cases' involving Soviet era Latvia and Aparteid South Africa.
Oh and to the person on here (I can't remember who, Arch was it?) complaining a while back that in the Swedish films, they shouldn't pretend that they don't know much English. In the books, Wallander doesn't have a great grasp of it, although he has to occasionally work with people using English so knows enough to just about get by.
In fact as a character he doesn't take much notice of what's happening in the rest of world as he spends so much of his time working and would openly admit that he's ignorant of situations elsewhere which he doesn't have to think about
