I have just finished reading the very first 3 of Henning Mankell's Wallanderr books. I'll have to buy more!!

What I hadn't realised is that they start off in January 1990. I had always thought they were relatively modern, but already I've read about 'cases' involving Soviet era Latvia and Aparteid South Africa.

Oh and to the person on here (I can't remember who, Arch was it?) complaining a while back that in the Swedish films, they shouldn't pretend that they don't know much English. In the books, Wallander doesn't have a great grasp of it, although he has to occasionally work with people using English so knows enough to just about get by.

In fact as a character he doesn't take much notice of what's happening in the rest of world as he spends so much of his time working and would openly admit that he's ignorant of situations elsewhere which he doesn't have to think about

Human Smoke by Nicholson Baker. I don't like fiction so prefer a challenging factual book such as this. It's a real belter. You know all that stuff we learned about the war and about how 'we' were only good and 'they' were only bad? Load of bollox that.

Additionally, you know how the Germans statred bombing British civilians thereby prompting the British to start bombing German civilians? Actually, it was the other way round and it was the RAF who started the incineration of German cities and what the Luftwaffe did was, on the whole, reprisals. An incredible book, this.

History is always written by the victors, so it would be an interesting read!

Incidentally, my Great Uncle was killed in a Wellington Bomber over Berlin in 1940, so yes I was aware of that there were bombing raids very early on.

People only seem to remember the later raids and the Lancasters though:rolleyes:
