What's Copenhagen like?

I once worked at a little English-speaking theatre in Copenhagen from January to March. It was utter hell. Freezing cold, dark, expensive, and yes, Tivoli was shut. To be fair, the job was horrible and I was lodging in the suburbs. My sister had a short break in Copenhagen not so long ago and quite liked it...

The museums and buildings are wonderful, though - I used to escape to the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek to get warm and see the sculptures, and there's always the Carlsberg brewery museum. Going up the coast to see Elsinore was pretty magical. There is a wonderful modern art museum out of town called Louisiana. The shops are lovely and among many superb patisserie/cafes there is one called La Glace, where one of the cakes they sell is called "Sports Cake" and is essentially posh custard pie - it's about 80% whipped cream and was created for a work at the Opera House in about 1880 which included a food fight.

OK I'm making it sound pretty good. I guess if you don't mind the dark, have very warm clothes, including sheepskin boots, and plenty of money, it would probably be quite fun...

I've been to Stockholm, but knowing that will not help you in any way. My sincerest apologies.

I prefer Stockholm to Copenhagen, but both brr and dark in February. I think Stockholm was marginally less expensive and now it has the abba museum

We went to Amsterdam to see an Opera (how middle class is that?) - and the flight & tickets were cheaper than the same gig in London (I'd missed the bus on the cheap tickets). And as a bonus, Philip Glass (composer) was sat at the end of our row - checking his opening night went well I guess.

And if you do go to Amsterdam, there is a great café in the library - which does superb stir fry Asian type food very cheap and is a nice building too.

I went to a couple of great classical concerts in Copenhagen too, one at the Tivoli concert hall (that was still open!).

Also I remember when I walked up to see the Little Mermaid statue, I encountered the King and Queen strolling along in the opposite direction. Which was nice...

I lived in/around Copenhagen for about 9 years. Lovely city, but as others have said not exactly a low-budget destination. And to be honest, February is not really the best time to visit.

OOh, my companion LIED TO ME. Oh well, it was a long time ago. But certainly not 1972, more like 1992.
