Thanks for the replies so far.
Eribiste - Got some eye protection. 1st ride out last month without them and "by eck" my eyes were streaming! Next day at work I liberated a pair of wrap around safety specs. Perfecto! Pretty stylish too!:becool:

You seem to have the bases covered..........

Shortly after I bought my Triban, Aldi/Lidle had one of their bi-annual cycle-kit bonanzas, so I was able to stock up on a few goodies like jackets, tops and padded pants etc............but two of my best (non-Aldi) purchases were a thin under-helmet skull-cap thingy and a Merino buff or neck gaiter. Highly recommended!

And cheap ski gloves. I'm amazed how people spend a fortune on cycling winter gloves and still have cold hands when for less than a fiver Campri ski gloves are the dogs doo dahs.

Forgot to mention that. I have bought some mudguards for the bike, struggled but eventually got them to fit perfectly. Went for slim full SKS? (I think that's what they are.) Quality guards but a right pig to fit.
Bought them for cycling over the wintry wetter months. A very good buy which really suit the bike.

Currently wear the padded shorts under trackie bottoms, trainers, compression long sleeved top, footie shirt (because it wicks) and a lightweight fleece in the cold weather.

Think I will need:
Long sleeved jersey
Short sleeved jersey (for better weather)

What about soft shell jackets? Are they too warm for cycling?

Hoping Santa brings me a long sleeved jersey for Christmas, it would get used very soon!

Beat me to it ! Never forget the eye protection, you really don't know the meanibg of pain 'till you catch a bee in the eye, [although any more of this weather it may end up being a haddock]

If you are going to ride in winter you will soon get uncomfortable with your trainers. When you do I would say there are two options, a pair of proper cycling shoes (and probably new pedals depending what you already have) or a pair of waterproof walking shoes. Whichever you go for you will want a pair of overshoes.

I personally went for the waterproof walking shoes. I picked a pair up for £50 from Sportsdirect. They keep my feet warm and dry unless it is really wet, when the water runs down my leg and into my socks, hence the need for overshoes.

I use a soft shell jacket and am fine with it, regarding your other gear, if it was me I would ditch the trackie bottoms and get a pair of padded tights, again you can pick up dirt cheap pairs from Sportsdirectand if you like them then get a decent pair later. I might look a tit in them but my cycling is much more comfortable than in trackie bottoms

As said above, only buy gear when you need it, everybody is different.

I've had no problems using cheap Karrimor running tops as base layers.

I didn't say that they're base layers, I'm too cheap to buy a real one and the running top under my bibs and a jersey on top keeps me warm, it's breathable too. I've worn it down to -6 with no issues.

I have some sports direct football base layer vests and although they are not the best they certainly do the job, some of their stuff is perfectly servicable although i would steer clear of their padded shorts unless its your only option.
I think everyone here has got all the bases covered , i only use a windproof when its raining or really cold and a lot of my jerseys were ebay finds under the retro jersey stuff as its cheap and can be good quality .Came home this morning at 3 am and it was about 4 degrees and i had on...
Aldi compression base layer long sleeve
long sleeve jersey
decathlon home brand running gilet, half the price of their cycling one and no different
decathlon padded shorts
aldi running leggings
aldi winter gloves
tenn outdoors overshoes
I was a bit overdressed as i was warm but it was drizzling so i wanted to keep the spray off.

If you can wait a little while keep an eye on Lidls for their cycling gear , bibs and tights @ £10 which i`ve been using for the past 3 months and are warm/comfortable and have even remained so in the rain. Soft shells , Madison have the Trail and one version has pit zips which is great for keeping cool when you`re working hard on the bike. Over time buy the best you can , i`ve been replacing my cheap tops with Merino and it`s worth it . I will also be going for a Gore jacket soon. Check the found a bargin post on the site , you can get really good gear at well below rrp as everyone gives a heads up on the thread. Cheers
