You picked it up 3BM, not me or any of the other habitual pedants.
Nothing to do with anti yank. It's correctly plural in the US too.
The reason is that mathematics derives from Greek and the singular would mean a single subject, mathematics is a number of connected subjects, hence plural.
Originally Arithmetic + Geometry + Astronomy (I think) it now includes Trigonometry, Calculus, Statistics and others, and Astronomy has moved off to join Physics.
The singular is fine if you define which one, but better in this case if you use Arithmetic on its own.
