Chucking out my DVD boxes to save space by using Maplin's finest CD/DVD folders gave an archiving issue.

I decided to key by director, nationality first then alphabetically:
1) UK + TV + Documentaries/Sport + Aussie/Zealand + Asia
2) Continental Europe by Country
3) Americas North & South

Anyone got any better ideas ? I thought of keying by genre, language, chronology, actors, title.

Odd ones would be colour of disc or autobiographically (a la High Fidelity).

I guess the point is to find a way you can navigate it and find what you want easily but to be honest I've sinned in Fopp too many times to have a clear idea of what is there...

stick em all on a hard drive and put the collection in the loft.

being a rather strange person, mine are arranged by the colour of the spine of the box...

...mostly.

another option i considered was by the height of the age ratings.... going from highest, to none.

alphabetical, genre, director or lead actor... it's all rather dull don't you think?

I go by shelf Thom. Top shelf, DVD's, bottom shelf, music
I don't have the luxury of living in the provinces @Crackle, with vast swathes of walls to accommodate multiple bookcases. Someones moving into my London flat with their stuff in the near future.

To put it another way, I have a finite shelf life problem.

I mean, why are DVD cases basically twice the size of CD cases ? I've chucked 5 bin bags of DVDs in the recycling and only just commenced with the Americas - such a waste of space...

Stuff them in any which way. When you want to watch a movie just reach in and get a surprise.

Unfortunately yesterday evening I pulled out Satantango. I was late for work this morning.

Not long before you won't have to worry, it will all be hard drives etc.
My entire 400+ CD collection went to a hard drive Sony system last year, I still have most of the CD's as there's something nice about loading a CD...Anyway, all stored alphabetically, likewise the DVD's that remain..
