I hope some kind forum member can shed some light on the following question.

What is the difference between a Sportive and an Audax? Silly question I know.

Generally about £40

^^ pretty much.

One is timed, the other isn't. In place of that, an Audax gives you a brevet card that you need to fill in as you go around the course, to prove that you've been there.

Sportives you pretend to race
Audax you pretend not to race

Sportives they give you a free gel or a banana
Audax they feed you pasta and cheese rolls.

Sportives give you a number to pin to your jersey
Audax give you a Brevet card to fill in

Sportives give you a timing chip to get round the course as quick as possible
Audax give you a minimum and maximum time of completion

Sportives give you a cheap bit of plastic or metal to hang round your neck saying you have ridden your bike
Audax send you back your brevet card after a few weeks

Sportives you follow some little florescent arrows
Audax you follow a route sheet

Oh yes, and as someone pointed out, about £40 difference.

I thought we all agreed that we would use the willy as a reference point to classify the answers.
Sportive is for those who are in denial while those who have accepted their condition do Audax.

Closer to reality is that those who have long passes from the OH do Audax because they enjoy the freedom, enjoy life and have completed the competitive phase of life's journey and are closer to nirvana. More or less.

Nice one! I've done a couple of Audaxes but not a sportive, I'm not sure I want to do one either.
