Gulf stream doing its job here. Don't think it's been much below freezing, so far. I'm right on the coast though; if you travel a few miles inland it can be a different story.

-5 a couple of times since the start of November. That first early one caught me out, but then it warmed up again until the past couple of weeks.

I have a digital thermometer with an external sensor which I fixed on a north-facing wall of the house to avoid direct sunlight. It measures room temperature and external air temperature, and includes maximum and minimum temperature memories. I didn't realise that it also has a frost alarm so that caused a panic when it went off one cold night - I switched the alarm off after that! I think at less than £4 from Lidl it was a bargain.

Quite a few years ago I was in Fargo (famous from the book, film and tv series) where we had a production centre. It was -38 Celsius. That was cold enough for me and I think even some kind of record for there. It was even too cold to turn boiling water into snow like this clip.

Coldest I ever experienced in the UK was minus 24c in Aviemore. The snow was so dry and powdery that as you walked to the car you built up a static charge then got a belt off the car door. The hotel staff asked us not to allow taps to dribble but to fill a basin and let it out with a rush as the outside drains were freezing up. My car would hardly start because the battery was so weak and the oil so thick. We had a fantastic day skiing in superb light fluffy snow. We saw a German bloke in the campsite in shorts.
