... greatest DIY achievement?

I have just built a run for the guinea pigs, Materials were 20pence cheaper than the smallest one at Pets at Home but its a biggun!

In the past I have put the odd carpet down (badly) and like a bit of amateur tree surgery but other than that I have not done much DIY, I am a 'pay a professional' sort of DIY'er usually.

My best friend is the complete opposite, he bought a derelict cottage and has spent the last few years completely rebuilding it, he has done most of it himself, including designing and building an extension and a timber framed garage!

I have been promising to put handles on the built in cupboards in our bedroom since we moved into this house 4.5 years ago now!

Its a bit of a running joke with family and friends, so it would almost be a shame to fix it now!

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Done a bit of wiring, woodwork, Plastering and stuff like that. Oh, and watched someone fit a fireplace for me. To be honest, unless it's not structural/safety critical/not in my line of sight then I'd rather get.someone else to do it. At least I can moan at them when it goes wrong then.

MrWC & WCMnr made the secure run for The Laydeez last Spring. It cost about a quarter of what it would have bought a ready-made one of the same standard & size.

A fitted wardrobe in our spare bedroom - which I can survey over my shoulder as I type this - looks pretty solid and is probably my crowning achievement. Done a few years ago. I bought the doors, hinges and stuff ready made, but everything else I built up myself from timber and plywood. It utilises a space above the stairwell which up till then had been wasted space.

Note: I have no skill in dovetailing, mortise-and-tenon jointing and the like, so everything is connected by nailing and screwing to battens. In fact most of the effort was, starting with raw materials, a drill and a box of screws and nails, figuring out how to put all this together! It may not be the most elegant piece of carpentry but at least it'll hold together.

I really like working with plywood. here is Sammy; who works for me sat a recently made flat pack for storage plywood picnic table that I made:

We have an Ikea cabinet that houses the TV and video to shut it all away when it's not being watched. When we bought a new flat telly Mrs 3BM said 'we' could saw the cabinet in half now so it wouldn't be so deep. After a few weeks of mentioning this every time the telly was on I eventually dismantled the unit, cut it all down including the drawers and then put it back together. And it worked!

Forgive me, but when I first read that post I had this image in my mind!

I put some shelves up some years back. Later that night (when we were asleep) it sounded like a lorry had driven into the front room as the shelves (admittedly with heavy books on them) had pulled off the wall - taking great chunks of plaster.

Don't get asked to do much DIY. Just like i don't get asked to put clothes in the washing machine after i 'accidently' mixed colours with whites.

Hence all that spare time to go cycling.
