Things always look funky on camera. There's plenty of room there and the speed isn't crazy high. I find if you filter at decent speed you can 'kick' into a space if the road narrows or something is approaching a little too fast/close. It's harder to do that if you're at a crawl. You'll also stay a helluva lot straighter at speed.

You mean you've found that so far. One of the big issues with cycling is that it is very safe - so safe that it may be disarmingly so. Doing these things is very safe and you are unlikely ever to fall victim to such risk factors. But these things are still risk factors nevertheless and a level of respect for the road out of proportion to the perception of safety is essential. In my view, not being concerned with speed, I see no need to take the extra risk.

Nothing wrong with Ben's filtering there. I do the same for about a mile every morning, occasionally crossing the white centre line. Always thank oncoming drivers for moving away from the centre line.

I never filter if I can avoid it - I've seen too many cyclists get hit doing it. But in a situation like this, I'd be tempted. Even so, I'd filter on the driver's side and only very slowly. Filtering on the kerb-side gets so many people crushed under the wheels of lorries. I don't want to go out that way.

On the bikesafe course they told an awful story of a motorcyclist filtering like this only to be hit by a gentleman in a rover turning left onto the street and then dragged 100 yards up the road under the front of the car before the driver was made aware that something was fatally and horribly wrong.

I still do it, but try to be as careful as possible.
