Hi all,

I posted a while back about the RS80 wheelset as a replacement for my stock and slightly worn (4 year old) Bontrager SSR wheels that came with my Trek 1.7 back in 2009.

I hadn't quite appreciated the amount of opinion and debate over wheel weight, aero etc until I started reading around the web.

Now I was going to go with the RS80 C24s, and they seem pretty lightweight, but is it reasonable to state that for a lightweight rider like myself who is fairly quick up the slopes on my current wheels, that the difference between a wheelset coming in at 1500gms or 1700gms is not going to be noticeable.

The reason I ask is that my current wheelset which have a 30mm rim depth come in at a fairly substantial 2125gms, and with rubber, skewers and cassette the total weight is 3380gms, so it isnt as though I am used to feather lite wheels and I have happily gone up and down all the local climbs, including a couple of very steep 1 to 2 mile climbs on my daily commute (15 miles each way).

As a result, perhaps something like the Fulcrum Racing Quattro, with a 35mm depth and a good 400gms less weight in the wheelset would suffice, and save me £100 into the bargain, while retaining any of the minuscule aero benefit my current wheels have given me.

Would that seem a reasonable thought pattern, and are the Fulcrum wheels generally well though of?

Sorry if that is as clear as mud, but all input most welcome

I'm sure they would be great to replace my worn set, and that is the main thing.

Do you think my thoughts on not going for lighter wheels for the benefits of a little aero are sound, or is it lighter is always best?
