The company i work for has just taken delivery of a new cycle shelter. Very nice it is too, apart from it has bloody wheel benders. i can't even think about putting my wheels in them things! To be honest our old cycle shelter has nothing wrong with it, it just needed up grading with Sheffield stands. They are so much better in my opinion.
Maybe i'm just being ungrateful.

Hardly your fault they didn't think to consult anyone knowledgeable. Your company wasted its money.

Why do they even still make wheelbenders?

We had wheel benders at my work place. I asked for them to be changed to Sheffield stands and much to my amazement the were! Not all of then though, one of the bike sheds still has them.

Sounds like you've at least got a shelter, where I work we only have a few wheel benders out in the open, no cover, I keep my bike in a corner of the warehouse, I can see my bike when I'm working on the packing bench.

We have wheel benders at work, they are not ideal, but they save space in a very cramped storage area. Just park your bike, rear wheel first, and lock through the rear triangle. The other option is to lock it to railings, but that is in the open, so most people go for the covereed wheel bender option.
There are all sorts of bikes, from low end up to carbon and ti framed bikes in there and no one complains, we are just happy to have a place to lock the bike up.

We have Sheffields at work, but I'm loathe to put the bikes it there at times, as they're plain stainless hoops.
Okay it's nothing fancy, just a Ribble 'Auadx/Winter' bike, but I'd like to keep the paint unblemished if I can

I tend to take a couple of pieces of pipe-lagging with me to place on the frame.

Failing that, I sometimes put it in our changing room, but one of the Consultants whinges about it. When I point out that he doesn't say anything to another Consultant, or the Registrar who leave theirs in the same changing room, he shuts up
Let alone when I mention the Consultants who take theirs through the Hospital, up to offices on the top floor.

Grumble over now.....

As with all things cycle/work related, it helps to have a decision maker on side. My boss installed shackles to a wall in an enclosed walkway just outside the office... Under cover and secure! I think it might have something to do with him keeping his posh Boardman there.

where i used to work, the wheel bender wasn't wide enough for my MTB tyres, so selfishly i parked across about 5 of them

At my last workplace, we had not only wheelbenders but mail crates collapsing all over the area!

As you can see though, competition for bike space was hardly an issue, so I locked my bike sideways to the stands, job done.

We have wheel benders at our work, I'm trying to get them replaced with Sheffields or the like,

The racks are always close to full and it gets tight to put a lock on,

I've had two bent wheels in the last year and no longer place my wheels in them, choosing to just lock the frame to one of the supporting posts.

Wheel bender racks are ok if there is no need to lock the bike up

This one is currently sat in the rack waiting to be taken home

What are Sheffields ?
i only recently moved all the bike hangers along and fitted two new ones, but as soon as i add more space they get used up.
i was thinking of looking at some sort of hanging arrangement to increase the number of bikes that can be accommodated.
Any suggestions as we seem to be getting more and more cyclists all the time.
(they breed like rabbits)

Given some people have no storage at work this might cheer you up.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
My workplace just installed shiney new heavy duty gates on our bike shed that are very secure which is great but then added some wheel benders for bike storage , luckily they left a large area where you can lock the bike against some railings still inside the secure area.

Well the shelter is now live. How the hell they expect to squeeze bikes so close together. I've had a chat with one of the directors and told him the reason i won't be using it. He was ok about it. Considering i have a nice new shiny bike, i don't want to see it trashed. I was watching all the others clambering over each others bikes, trying to unlock their own, at kicking out time last night. Unless i can lock my bike to the side frame, with the wheels out of the benders, i won't be happy, and that's impossible when i'm on later starts, as it's already tight with bikes.
