First post, please be gentle.

Has anybody experienced a failure like this before.

It is a Bianchi wheel which 'went pop' on Saturday afternoon.

Yes, this is the most common type of wheel failure. Small cracks either side of the eyelet develop into larger cracks and eventually the wheel fails completely.

I guess that you didn't keep a close eye on these rims for damage or signs of cracking.

Although, having a closer look: is it juist the outer wall that has cracked or the inner too?

Thanks for the reply.

There is no visible sign of damage with the tube & tyre on.
So I assume the damage is limited to the outer.

Not sure how I would

without keep removing the tyre, tube & rim tape.

OK, that's less common IME.

Never seen it before without the inner wall splitting too.

What's that big hole? Is that the valve hole? looks enlarged.

Yeah, it is the valve hole. If you look 'through' the enlarged hole you will see the exit hole for the valve and then the hub.
Didn't notice any signs of damage last time I had a puncture either.

Not the greatest picture I know.

Unfortunately I don't know.

My brother in law built the bike for me about 5 years ago with spare parts he had. I think I paid £60 for whatever bits he needed to buy.

I only started riding about 3 months ago and have done maybe 600-800 miles

I haven't a clue how many miles my Brother in law will have done on it previously.

Maybe some with more knowledge than me can tell how old it is from these pictures..

It won't fix the wheel but it will get those grubby marks off your floor tiles.

Yeah, because I really need a spotless back garden.
Must remember to get some flash to clean the flags.

My bad that some teak oil splashed on them when I treated the garden furniture.

I assume your house is sterile ? Or maybe the carers keep the padded cell clean for you !
