I have caliper brakes and turn the quick release to slacken the cable, undo the quick release but removing the wheel is really tricky.

As a novice, I don't want to damage anything and surely the wheel should release without needing to be deflated?

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

There should be a little tear drop looking hinge that you turn to release the brakes before removing the wheel. Where it says "quick release lever" if your brake looks like this.

lol sorry i misread your post i thought you meant you were just un-doing the quick release skewer. I have to do the same as you since i fitted 25 c tyres the little buggers just wont fit through he gap in the brakes. Im sure someone sensible will be along to answer you soon.

Depends upon the bike and the Tyre size. I run 25mm Conti GP4000 S on my Venge and need to deflate these to get them off the bike its perfectly normal if you run 25's on this bike

Once you have done the caliper quick release you can still use the barrel adjuster to open them out a bit more... Just dont forget to adjust them back when you re-insert the wheel!!!

 Having bought my first bike with brakes that have those quick-release levers, a few months ago I did exactly that, riding off on a long ride without turning the lever back to its tight position. Several km further on, I noticed the brake pads were pretty loose, so thought "no problem" and adjusted them inwards using the barrel adjuster. It was only when I got home from this long ride that I realised using the barrel adjuster wasn't necessary .
