Hi chaps, I had to remove my rear wheel today to fix a puncture, after refitting the RD is now a bit hit and miss changing to the smallest cog. Can changing the quick release tension cause this? A bit annoying as all was working well.

Maybe the wheel wasn't centred originally or isn't centred properly now?

Wheel seems to be in drop outs correctly, I will re index gears and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

I'd check the wheel was in right, it should not have altered the indexing. I've got 1 bike that has 2 different wheelsets (specific to that bike in that they are 8-9 speed Dura-ace and the gear spacing only works right on that frame) and the rear wheels swap over and both index the same.

You'd be surprised, I was building a winter commuter and had a hell of a job indexing the gears to new wheels and cassette..over and over I adjusted, just couldn't get it right. I sat there looking at it...right...wheel out, checked it (what for I don't know)...put it back in...bingo, worked perfectly...instantly.
Slight mis-alignment, who knows.
