Because the air-resistance of fat tyres vs thin tyres becomes very apparent when you ride at speeds over about 15mph and easily negates any small benefits in rolling resistance.

I would have thought that the main reason for skinny tyres is weight reduction which affects acceleration and hill climbing?

Similarly for 700c vs 26" which were also compared in the article. The former is around 12% larger and lo and behold otherwise identical tyres are around 12% heavier.

It would have been better if the article had qualified the findings by stating the importance of other parameters on performance.
